E TA left this review about The Mitre Inn

A back street local which was built in the 17th Century on the site of an earlier ale house and, it is rumoured, brothel used by the inmates of the nearby ruined abbey. It has a single U-shaped bar and a skittle alley, the latter hosting matches on a regular basis. The bar is very much spit-and-sawdust, though without the sawdust to protect the timber floor. There are TV screens, a pool table and a jukebox which randomly bursts into life with the most appalling noises. The landlord was welcoming enough, though he did seem a bit pessimistic. There was no real ale available, and no food. The Punch Taverns WiFi didn’t work properly, and there weren’t enough locals in to make it worth staying for a second bottle, given that there are other pubs nearby which do sell draught ale. It could be so much better.
