Slightly awkward to find pub in Beveley Glen a few minutes walk uphill from Oakengates centre on the old Holyhead Road (part of the Roman Watling Street)now bypassed , so the pub finds itself in a cul-de-sac . The exterior is fairly plain from the front , it is a narrow one room pub with sturdy wooden seating and tables with a TV at one end , the bar is central and the far end has comfy leather sofas , if there are people sitting at the bar its a bit of a squeeze to get by . At the rear of the pub where the old lounge/dining room was is Jenkos mongolian resturant , the room has been extended into an unusual replica of a mongolian yurt , it has a good local reputation for the food , but i have not eaten so will not comment. Back to the bar , the staff and locals are very friendly and the beer is exellent , three ales on all local , usually from Hobsons or Salopian, on my visit Hobsons Best and Twisted Spire plus Salopian Oracle , the Twisted Spire was exellent and at £2 a pint fantastic value .
This is a good pub well worth a visit

John Horton left this review about The Compasses

Wow, what a revelation this was. The outside was anything but inviting but the inside said 'come in & make yourself comfortable'. Which we duly did. Four real ales (Ludlow, Salopian, Hobson's & Bridgnorth Brewing) all well presented, very tasty (I had 2 & my mate the other 2)& at a price that told use we'll be back. Comfortable, warm and very agreeable. Food available but didn't see a menu so I'll not comment. Narrow single room bar/lounge with restaurant area attached. The locals started chatting to us within minutes of our arrival, very friendly. Plenty of parking available. Just off the Holyhead Road (old A5) between Oakengates & Ketley. Yeh, I'll be back - think I've heard that somewhere before!
