A quick wildcard visit here, and on approach we did wonder if we’d regret it (things have moved on since some of the older, more positive reviews here and elsewhere). This is now politely described as a basic locals boozer - laminate flooring, walls painted in what I jotted as ‘mushy overcooked pea green’, music video TV and a ragged dart board. Four pumps with one ale on, New Brew Nova Gold which was truly awful. Impressively, my replacement of Guinness was almost as bad, which takes some doing. Quite why Salopian still have their branding above the door, god only knows - but they should show up quick and paint it over. Summed-up viscerally by the two posters below, I need not write more. 1.5 (visited June)

Real Ale Ray left this review about Alexandra Inn

On our approach this pub looked promising, especially with a chalkboard outside promoting real ale, one of which was from Battlefields Brewery. On entry, I thought the pub was scruffy and there was noticeably ripped seat covering along the front bench, which was also filthy. This started to ring alarm bells. The landlady did run some beer off before serving the three of us, but the beer had that apparent appley taste, which was a good sign the beer was off. Unfortunately, the Guinness offered in exchange was also in dire condition. To sum up, stay well clear, unless the pub changes hands and receives experienced publicans, who take an interest in what they're doing.

Will Larter left this review about Alexandra Inn

I came in here with a splinter group from our crawl of the Wellington to Wolverhampton railway line, tired of the unremitting excellence of the pubs encountered so far. We'd been told there was sometimes a real ale or two on here, and on entry there turned out to be just the one, a solitary pump clip on the bank of four hand pumps. We were the only customers, and the landlady pulled a couple of pints through before pouring our three halves. On tasting, it was apparent that the beer was not in a drinkable condition. The landlord apologised and gave the feeble excuse of not being a real ale drinker himself and (therefore) not knowing how to keep it properly. Now I'm a betting shop manager by trade, and although I would never bet on roulette or numbers myself, I make it a point of professional pride to know how those games and those bets work.

Two of us accepted the offer of a Guinness instead of the undrinkable real ale, and it has to be said that this was not a very good drink either. This man said he'd been in the pub trade for more than 30 years. I reckon a novice just out of a three week training course would have a better idea of how to run a pub than this waste of space.

A quiet edge of town terraced local. The four handpumps were unclipped! I was told that they only sell one Real Ale but the delivery was late. I had my first ever half of Stowfords Press and dashed back to the "triangle"

Not much has changed over the years at the Alex(as it is known locally) still a basic one room Victorian boozer well described in previous reviews , six handpulls available with four on during my visit , Burton Bridge Mild and three from Battlefield , Darwins Blondie , Darwins Gold and an OK Darwins Amber , the Amber and Gold both at a very cheap £2 a pint , the other two pumps had clips reversed both looked like Salopian to me .
Very quiet on my Saturday night visit with just an old couple sitting by the window and a another chatty couple with a young kid by the bar , the Landlady was friendly and chatty .
I like it here worth popping in for one

This is a little end-terrace pub, which i assume is named after the wife of Eddy VII. It may be a conversion from a terraced house, with bay windows added. The pub has recently been repainted to reflect its change from a BCA pub to a Salopian one. It is now in white with black touches. There is a beer garden. The interior has a single room, with brown and beige walls, mainly wood floor and white ceiling. A brick fireplace and breast is a major feature. The perimeter and chair seating is tidy and new. There are a few old photos and and cartoons on the walls, and a couple of brasses, but it isnt cluttered. There is a TV, with sport on, a dart board and there was soft music in the background. The service was fine, and there were a couple of people in, alas, the lingering malodour of one pervaded the pub. Beer; usual stuff with Salopian Oracle, Gold and Rhapsody. The Rhapsody was well kept - Salopian are just a little hoppy for me. A great pub and one i will return to.

Now run by the local Darwin Inns Pubco , the Alex has had a minor refurb , nothing major just a good clean and tidy and a lick of paint that has made the pub a lot more welcoming , still 6 handpulls but only three in use on my visit , Salopian Shropshire Gold , Hobsons Mild and the exellent Salopian Lemon Dream .
After a couple of years of neglect by Black Country Brewery and its change the Landlord every month policy its nice to see the Alex back to what it does best , being a basic friendly down to earth boozer , Oakengates is back to being a four real pubs town again

Ale Monster left this review about Alexandra Inn

Traditional one room drinkers pub owned by Black Country Ales, there is a small bar counter on the right of the public bar with a brick coal fireplace at the front on the left, dart board on the wall at the back and a flat screen TV on the wall next to the bar which is usually showing one of the music channels at a modest volume. Interesting decorations are provided by old photos of the local area, a couple of portraits of members of the royal family and a collection of old amusing Guinness brewery posters.

Regular ales are Black Country Ales Fireside, BCA Pig on the Wall (Mild) and BCA Bradley’s Finest Golden with three changing guest beers. In my opinion the ales have all been in good condition on my visits and there is a chalk board which shows the upcoming guest beers.

A great traditional, no nonsense drinker’s pub with a good selection of well kept ales. Oakengates has a surprising number of good traditional real ale pubs and I would recommend it for a mini pub crawl as many of them do a good selection of ales and they are right next to each other. This place is definitely worth a look, I always pop in here and the Crown when I’m in the area.

One room former Bankss pub now Black Country Brewery , as you enter theres comfy seats and an old fireplace , further down its bare boards and a dartboard at the far end and thats your lot, 6 ales on , 3 from BCB plus 3 guests , its OK in here but was full of kids on my visit so marked down , a 6 year old jumping up and down on the cellar flaps dont do much for the atmosphere !

Called in early on a Thursday evening recently. Very quiet as it was about 5.30. They had 4 cask beers on. Two from Worfield and 2 from Black Country. I had a Worfield Coalport Dodger mild and very nice it was too. Needs a bit of a spruce up but overall it was pretty decent.
