I arrived here on a Friday afternoon and immediately realised that I had been here before around 20 years ago. It's an old pub near one of Shrewsbury's prominent churches. The old sign outside reveals that it was once a Whitbread house but according to What Pub is now owned by the Ei group.
Inside it's a single Olde Worlde room with the bar on the left and initially a carpet then stone flagged floors.
The bar has six hand pumps which had one unused, M&B Mild, Ludlow Best, Stonehouse Cambrian Gold, Taylor's Landlord and Salopian Golden Thread. Unfortunately I couldn't see the Salopian clip properly so read it as Shropshire Gold and went for the Landlord (£3.60) which was in good nick but I'm sure inferior to the Golden Thread.
This is a pleasant enough old pub but I suspect that in the past it's been somewhat ruined by Whitbread.

This is a good looking half timbered 16th century building from the outside and an equally good looking pub from the inside with its low beamed ceiling, stone flagged floor and white washed beamed walls. Plenty of wooden seating around the single room and I think I counted six ale pumps on the bar with five beers on. These were Timothy Taylor Landlord, Cambrian Gold, Salopian Golden Thread, Ludlow Best and a decent Highgate M&B Mild.
No TV’s , no obtrusive soundtrack, just a very good pub with a good ale selection.

This pub apparently dates from the late 15th century, which I can well believe. What's not so old is the Whitbread's national brewery conglomerate trademark deer's head logo standing sentinel over the hanging sign which bears the name of Three Fishes - surely the plural of Fish is...errr...Fish?
Anyway, this is a fine old lovely pub and one of the most famous in the town, worthy of inclusion on any crawl or even for an extended stay, where I enjoyed my half of Ludlow Best.

An old half-timbered building but the bar has been refurbished up to a hotel lounge style. A good atmosphere though, with conversation leading, and a reasonable selection of ales including a mild (Highgate M&B) in good order.

First return here since a very bad experience being bustled out by locals at the bar, thankfully a much more pleasant visit. Lovely looking building on pretty street, it is a small place and therefore space is limited inside. Good choice of beers,

In a very attractive part of town, this is a particularly old building with many exposed timbers and the ceiling starts low and slopes down towards the loos at the rear of the bar room,so watch your head ! The interior is quite small, with fitted bench seating to the front,a real fireplace and a small back section with some leather sofas. There is a blue carpet to the front, and a stone floor around the bar with a good selection of pub grub described on a chalk board above the fireplace. However it's not food dominated and is a proper boozer. The 7 handpumps were offering on my trip Salopian Hop Twister (very decent),Stonehouse Station Bitter,Purity UBU,TT Landlord,Three Tuns Stout,Phoenix White Tornado and Millstone True Grit.A very decent selection.
Described as the "first smoke free pub",this should always be included on any real ale tour of the town, and is worthy of a much longer stay. Charming.

Ancient timber and plaster jettied pub in the conservation area.Inside, a single room with nooks and crannies, as described above. Our visit was early lunchtime on an October Monday: a largely venerable clientele was gathered, discussing the death of an actress from Last of the Summer Wine. I fitted in well as Compo.
We'd traveled from Kent, only to find the beer of the week had come up from Sussex-Burning Sky's epic and heavyweight Aurora..This was followed by an upstanding Stonehouse Station bitter.Unfortunately, no beers from Salopian were available,an omission compounded by other pubs during our week in the county.
Grub was good, the welcome warm and jolly.I'd return.

A quick revisit on my epic Shrewsbury crawl. Not much change to report (a good thing!). My Stonehouse Station Bitter was in decent form. Still my personal pick of the town's outlets in the face of stiff competition.

March 2013
A pub I remember visiting when I was a student in mid-Wales and a twice-yearly trip to Shrewsbury for new clothes and civilization was deemed a cultural highlight. Back then this pub was a pioneer, being proudly and resolutely no-smoking years before the legislation was enacted. So breaking a train journey at Shrewsbury last week I decided to seek it out again. Little has changed since the early 2000’s. The building’s exterior and location in the narrowed cobbled streets of the town’s Medieval Quarter is an obvious pointer to the building’s age (around 400 years old I believe). The interior is blander than the exterior suggests but nonetheless still holds some points of interest in the low-beamed heavy timbering and flagstones. And, as another point of no change, it is still a true ‘quiet’ pub with no TV (that I could make out) or piped music; just the hubbub of chat and, in a gentle reminder of history constantly passing here, a ticking clock that meanders in and out of earshot depending on the volume levels. A Good Beer Guide regular for many years, there were five ales available (2 x the local Salopian, Three Tuns Stout, Doom Bar, TT Landlord) plus a number of ciders and a perry. My two ales were first-class and Mrs Quinno’s Ginger Twist cider was also pretty good too. We ate here and the food, despite being a little on the higher-end of the pricing spectrum for pub grub, was obviously home-made and hearty (around £9-10 for a main) so no complaints from us, though be aware that food and beer orders are taken separately at different ends of the bar. We also got an unprompted friendly ‘cheerio’ from the staff on leaving, which rounded off a pretty top-notch visit. I’m aiming to be back a hell of a lot sooner next time. Rated 9.

In my opinion, one of the better pubs in Shrewsbury. Good selection of well kept ales, plenty of seating and no funny smells. We were in here quite late on a Saturday night and expected it to be rammed but once inside the place opened out into a large bar where we could all sit and chat over a well kept pint.

A bit more atmosphere on our latest visit with a few people eating and plenty of banter going on between the barmaid and the regulars. Once again my pint of Stonehouse bitter was in excellent nick. I'm happy to call in for one whenever we're in Shrewsbury, but for me it's not a place to settle down for a full night.

Pleasant enough, one roomer, with a more mature clientele. Four real ales on when I called and the pint I had was very well kept. Not a lot of atmosphere as it was pretty quiet. It's a decent pub.
