Real Ale Ray left this review about Bird in Hand

A good locals pub now under new management. We met the young landlady on our visit who was very upbeat and chatty and made us very welcome, and I have to say her cask ales were in tip top condition. The bar area was about the best room in here and to get to the lounge you had to take a walk around the back of the pub.
The lounge area to me was quite grim looking and I think the lighting in here didn't help to make it any more inviting. Three ales on handpump HPA, Proper Job and Butty Bach.

On my first visit to this pub, mid afternoon, I entered the bar on the left hand side. There were about four or five locals in just after the pubs 4pm opening time. The Wye Valley Buttybach was very good. Later on, the lady behind the bar brought out a plate of filled muffins for the customers to enjoy free of charge. I left very satisfied after a pint and a half and two muffins! (score 6).

My second visit about 9pm on a Friday night (18 Oct 19!), I entered the "lounge" on the right hand side. There was one lady sat near the bar in one of the most dull dingy rooms I could imagine. I left and entered the public bar. I had a quick half of "something" I can't remember. With about six people sat around wall seats, there was no pub atmosphere at all.
(score 4)

Two bar pub as described I went in the left hand one labelled just "bar". L shape with pool, darts, jukebox and two big tellys. cask beers were Wye Valley Buttybach, and HPA, plus Three Tuns Rantipole, two low T-bars provide standard kegs and there were some cobs on sale. It's a decent local pub but busier than on Aqualung’s visit and the outside door to the lounge was open on a Friday evening. It also has a one armed landlord and hand written “cash only” signs dotted about.

The third Coton Hill pub is another local boozer. As noted below there is a public bar to the left and a separate lounge to the right. It wasn't clear if the lounge was actually open so I ended up in the public. This is an L shaped lino floored room with a TV, darts and pool table. There was also a welcoming lit fireplace.
There were three hand pumps which had one available soon, Salopian Lemon Dream and Wye Valley Butty Bach. I went for the Lemon Dream (£3.20) which was in good nick.
I didn't think this one was vastly different to the other two nearby. All three were fairly quiet on an early Wednesday evening.

On my afternoon visit I found this pub to be not too bad. The 2 cask ales were TT Landlord and Shropshire Gold. Sadly there were 3 beer bellied plasterers playing pool and not the mini-skirted bints of the previous review.

Pub is as described below , fairly busy on my visit , plenty of people in the bar mostly watching the football though the 3 mini skirted teenage girls playing pool were getting plenty of attention . Only two handpulls in use , GK IPA and Timothy Taylor Landlord which i had , it was OK but could have been better . Its OK in here though i would not make a special trip

Locals pub half way up Coton Hill. Has a decent enough exterior, if a little shabby. All the curtains were closed which doesn't make it look welcoming. Has two entrances, the one on the left goes to the bar and the one on the right into the lounge. You can't get from one to the other without going outside. Which is how I noticed the covered smoking area out the back with seating and a lit chimnea to keep people warm. A nice touch that. Has 3 handpumps but only two were on serving Deuchars and TT Landlord. Had a pint of the Landlord which was very average, and that's being kind. There were 3 or 4 people sat at the bar and a couple playing pool which pretty much filled the room. I went to sit in the lounge to read my paper, where you could almost hear the tumbleweed rolling through. It's not really a bad place but looks to be struggling. I don't think I'll be coming back to be honest.
