Komakino . left this review about The Spire & Spoke

UPDATE:
Taken over by the former team at the nearby Fat Fox, this has been given the makeover it sorely needed, although it's a completely different beast now; the bar having been rotated by 90 degrees, carpet replaced by new boards and links of paint inside and out bringing this into the 21st century. If you like pizza and cake, you'd do alright here as there's precious little else to eat but the ale line-up was impressive with 5 on handpump: Loddon Citra Quad (their 'beer of the week' and vegan-friendly), West Berks Maharaja IPA, TT Landlord, XT HopKitty and West Berks Mr Chubb's, although £5 for a pint of the Maharaja IPA means, sadly, that either London prices are finally heading their way up the M40 or Covid is giving places a chance to catch up on lost earnings.

Situated on a one-way street off the town centre, this is a pleasingly ungentrified country pub almost at the foot of the Chiltern Hills which offered four average ales, including Mitchell & Butler "X1" for a bargain £2.50 a pint. A touch on the 'local' side (the Fat Fox is upmarket and the Chequers too far from the centre), Radio 2 playing loudly through a TV set seemed unnecessary, but a smallish beer garden with a great view of the hills means this isn't quite the lost cause it makes itself out to be and the cavernous space behind the bar is a bit of an oddity.

At the foot of Watlington Hill with Red Kites circling overhead. A small friendly pub (freehouse) serving simple at old fashioned prices. Would like it as my local. Ideal for a break if walking in the area or exploring this interesting little town.
