I enjoyed my visit to this Nicholsons pub yesterday and it is in the 2014 Good Beer Guide. Good selection of ales on, and bar staff were quick and efficient keeping an eye on who was next to be served despite the crowd at the bar. Enjoyed 2 Truman's beers, US Pale and UK Gold. Mixture of seating in a variety of drinking areas, and some great quotes painted on the walls. Outside courtyard will be popular in the summer.

A Nicholsons house tucked down a side alley ,the entrance to the Monks Bars is to the right, while to the left are the loos.A courtyard extend down past the building with a decent amount of outside seating. The interior is on three levels with the bar to the right,a raised area mainly for dining but extending around a corner and a third level a kind of garret with a few tables. The interior rambles around and is worth investigating.
Most punters gather around the bar where there is an wall mounted clock and much wood paneling.Over two ranks of handpumps,I noted 10 different real ales but that's where my notes fail me,suffice to say my Vale Black Beauty was in very good nick. There were a few national real ale brands,Nicholson's Pale Ale and some Locales as well.
In the 2013 GBG,an old building worth inspecting but with a slight pub chain vibe, the muzak seemed out of place. However worth including on a crawl.

As previous reviews state this is an old pub down a narrow alley off the High Street , fairly busy on my visit so i did not get the chance to explore the whole pub , the end i did get to see was typical olde world pub style with a large fireplace ans seating comprised of low leather sofas and chairs at the far end , and some high stools and tables opposite the bar .
There were around seven handpulls and my pint of Stonehenge Eye Opener was decent enough , service was OK if a bit on the slow side .

An old pub which I presume was once a coaching inn accessed by a flagstoned alleyway off the high street, nowdays a Nicholsons owned pub with several ales available,my choice was the Nicholsons Pale Ale brewed by St Austell ,which I have to say was the coldest beer I have ever been served,I had brain freeze!Having parked it in the sun I finally got some taste out of it with a couple of mouthfuls left ,The pub itself seems an ok place befitting of its historic tag, they need to sort the beer temprature out though, I will give it another go.

Lovely old Oxford pub hidden away down an alley off of the High Street near the carfax crossroads. A Nicholsons pub with usually a choice of 6 or 7 real ales. Brakspear is a regular but it has a good choice of changing guest ales. Jaipur IPA is often on and is very popular locally. Prices are competitive for central Oxford. Has a decent sized outside courtyard for the summer / smokers. Can get very busy but service is usually pretty efficient.

Serving real ales which you are invited to try before you buy, a nice pub with lots of character, worth a visit.
