Seemed a bit down-at-heel on my visit compared to what I recalled from 2015 - felt a bit cold and gloomy, feels like it needs lightening-up a bit. Remains GBG listed with six ales on, my By The Horns Blue Bird was in good nick (NBSS 3.5). Also a collection of ciders.

July 2015
A cracking local and specialist ale pub. Enter at street level and up some steps to the main bar. Painted (for wont of a better phrase) swimming pool blue with quarter length varnished wood panelling. Some nice cornicing if you look upwards. There’s a rear function room down a couple of steps. Compact two-tier rear patio. I sat in the elevated wood booth seating area which made me feel like king of the castle. WiFi available, child and dog friendly too. Live music Saturdays. Eight pumps with seven on; Elmers Flying Monk, Prescott Hill Climb, Sadlers Courage, Slaters Top Totty, Old Hooky, Ramsbury Bitter and Wye Valley HPA. Also five bag in a box ciders/perries. Small but non-mainstream keg selection. Advertised take-outs which was good to see. I tried the Sadlers and Slaters and was rewarded by two top-class beers both in taste and condition. Also some small filled rolls at the bar, something we don’t see enough of in the south. Friendly bunch inside and it seemed like a proper community boozer. A little corker and well-worth getting the train for. Has been GBG-listed for 30-odd years. Rated 9

The drinkers' pub in Charlbury: a nice unspoilt bar with an excellent range of beers and ciders. Generally finished in brown woodwork with green walls, the bar is in the centre, with a couple of steps down to a small area at the front and a larger, modern extension at the rear. Watch out for the well! There is a patio/yard area to the back. The range of ales changes but usually includes a dark one or two. At time of visit on offer were regulars Wye Valley HPA and Ramsbury Bitter with Hooky, Box Steam Ghost Train, Arkell's Spiced Pumpkin, Kelham island Pale Rider, and Gravitas and War Poet from Vale. Half a dozen boxed ciders were also available, as well as a few keg craft beers. There is occasional live music and comedy but few other distractions from the beer, which is kept in excellent condition by the way. Food is not generally served apart from a visiting pizza man on Thursday evenings.

Popular with locals and popular with CAMRA, the Rose & Crown was busy and buzzing on a recent Friday night. With a fair crowd outside, we got seats easily enough and enjoyed a range of ales dispensed from 7 pumps. Bar staff are on the ball with recommendations and information about the beer they're selling.

Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
