Will Larter left this review about The Lion

Hotel bar with appropriate decor and background music, with entrance from the street in the next door building, or from the left of the arch that would have led to the stables in coaching days. There's a selection of standard keg beers including Beavertown Neck Oil and Theaktons Best Bitter. The latter is better than the cask version which goes by the same name but a different recipe. My half of this beer was not as cold as some cask beers I've had lately, and not too bad a drink at all.

The bar, which now includes the formerly separate 114 Grill in the next building, is very smart, with herringbone pattern parquet floor, plain walls and grey upholstery. A couple of modern paintings, channeling JMW Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed, provide a momentary diversion. A pleasant quarter of an hour but no reason to return, as far as I'm concerned.

Alan Winfield left this review about Lion Hotel

The Lion Hotel is situated at the top end of the pedestrianised shopping street.
Once inside i went in a fairly large smart room at the front of the pub there may have been other rooms but i did'nt look, there were two real ales on the bar i had a drink of Theakston best and this was a decent enough drink the other beer was Boddingtons bitter.
The pub was also operating as a hotel and had a AA two star rating at the time of my visit.
