Located some way outside Sutton-in-Ashfield town centre on the road towards Mansfield, this is definitely a locals' boozer.

I arrived to find a dog barking away and a group of regulars sitting along the bench seating. The landlord was behind the bar and he was quite vocal initially until the rather brash landlady turned up. She would liberally throw in the F word and several other expletives, as the landlord sat quietly eating some kind of stew at one of the tables.

The dog continued to bark. He clearly had an aversion to a guy who was there to fix some of the pumps behind the bar, despite this guy having visited the pub many times in the past. I was also told that the dog would bark at people going to the toilets and also those leaving. Those wanting to use the facilities are warned to advise a regular first, so that the dog can be brought under control! I duly announced my desire to spend a penny and the dog duly started kicking up a fuss as one of the regulars grabbed hold of it. Clearly a source of great entertainment for the locals.

A couple of real ales were on - Blue Monkey BG Sips & Shipstone's Gold Star.

I quite enjoyed my visit here. The pub clearly has a loyal following and the pub dog will provide plenty of entertainment if around. He was fairly harmless by the way, more the size of a cat than a rottweiler!

Although the pub's situation on a busy main road is not promising, we persevered and found a pleasant interior with an enthusiastic landlord. There were three beers available: Black Sheep Bitter, St Austell Tribute and Blue Monkey Infinity. Beers were in tip top condition, and luckily it was not a karaoke night, so I'd have no problem calling in again if in the area.

the pub's beer garden is one of the most pleasant in the area (it may even be the only 'garden' beer garden in the area.
A point of interest is the chicken flock, kept for fresh free range organic eggs in the kitchen. There is now a range of bar meals available, but the chef/landlord says, 'if i've got it, i'll cook it' - and he is a very good plain cook!

They do 'Eat for a quid' on Wednesday nights (7pm on) usually pie and chips, fish and chips or a stew and dumplings - good portions and good food

Karaoke on Saturday night is probably the best in the area. No tv stand in front of you, it's all on big screen and on a monitor on a low beam in front of the singer. The landlord runs it and has it set up for maximum songs on the night, not lots of 'in-between music'

speed the plough is the 'best kept secret' in the area. you only have to visit on a Saturday night to find out why.
