The New Engine house is located in the hosing just off Carlton Hill just in the area of Thorneywood and contrary to what i and what I assume quite a lot of people might think this place is still open. This is an old 50’s/60’s looking estate pub built to serve the estate and is quite ugly from the outside. This is one of the strangest pubs I have been in in recent times as on my visit the entire pub was in darkness with no light on at all when it was dark outside except for the lights shingling from behind the bar. There were only a couple of blokes drinking fosters and they didn’t seem to care so I didn’t pass comment (literally everyone was sitting in the dark). The pub is very old school and has a dated interior that looks like it has been kept intact from the 60’s. As you enter there is are two long oblong shaped rooms to the left and straight ahead with the bar sandwiched between in an L shape that serves both rooms. The decor is old shag pile carpets and old benches with some pink ugly bench seating that looks really old and worn. The drinks selection was standard boring keg stuff with a few lesser seen beers in pubs like this and they were Gk IPA Keg, bud Light and Gk West Coast IPA. Amazingly there was two real ale pumps on the bar, one with a reversed Speckled Hen pump an another with a makeshift marker pen pump clip that simply read mild. I enquired about what mild it was but he bar man did not have a clue and could not tell me anything about it so offered me a taste and it was absolute Vinegar so I opted for a Guinness although this does tell me that they at least do sell real ale in some capacity sometimes which is very surprising, Even my Guinness order was wrong as he poured John Smiths (£3.10) but I said it was ok and settled for that. Overall a very basic dingy back street estate pub that the average Joe would not me advised walking into. The beer was not that cheap for the type of place and the whole no lights thing was just Bizarre. I’m sure a few locals from around must pop in to keep it ticking over but I will probably never visit again.
P.s It does have one of the few functioning skittle alleys in Nottingham to which visiting teams come to play.
