Will Larter left this review about The Playwright

This is a substantial corner pub close to Nottingham Trent University, featuring some good quality, comfortable furniture and relaxing dark green paint. The bar has four hand pumps, two of them featuring brews from that vibrant, young Bedford brewer, Charlie Wells, and one other with a beer from Brewpoint, coincidentally also from Bedford and - oh look, it's not a coincidence: also owned by Charles Wells. My half of DNA was a little warm and consequently a little dull too. I found myself more interested in taking in the surroundings - mirrors, tiles, fireplaces - than drinking my beer. If they could get the beer right, this would be a worthy destination.

Alex Conway left this review about The Orange Tree

Located in the heart of student central over the road from the University Building is the orange tree. To my knowledge this is a small chain that operates a dozen or so pubs under a middle class/modern/student/ young professional type brand. Straight off the bat this seems like an oxymoron to me as the one thing students do not have in abundance is money so why try and position yourself to students but offer expensive food and drinks? The inside is all bare wooden floors with a bohemian element to the pub with long patterned drapes and a modern exposed brick type decor. There are several rooms that have been knocked through but the main bar area is the main part of the pub. A centrally located bar has four hand pumps with harvest pale being a permanent fixture. One pump was unclipped with the other two featuring Black iris coffee stout (£3.90) and a pale ale called DANA Special (£3.60). I’m sorry but for Nottingham and student central these prices are frankly ridiculous, I can see why the pub was empty and peak lunchtime in a Wednesday afternoon they are completely missing their market and operation against everything that logic says should happen. My Black iris was a ok while the DANA special although again kept reasonably was a horrible sour drink (not in a gone off way just a truly terrible tasting beer). This pub really does not appeal to me and never has, it’s for the want to be pretentious types who think they are socialising in higher class pub when really it’s a poor, shabby interpretation with many others such as the Old angel and Faradays offering a similar but superior service, I cannot recommend this place.

Favourite hangout of the Left Lion crew apparently, this is a young persons pub with a great selection of beers, wines and cocktails. Food was good the few times I've eaten there. Several rooms in a slouchy, hipster stylings. Occasional music. Good pub all in all.

Alan Winfield left this review about The Orange Tree

This used to be a Shipstones tied house called the Clinton Arms this had a bad reputation because it had strippers on most nights.
The Orange Tree is now a large student orientated pub that has been opened out with drinking areas wrapped around the bar.
The last time we came in here there were a couple of real ales on the bar we tried Nottingham Rock Bitter and this was ok it is dimly lit inside and students tend to chill and slouch about in here but the pub is big enough to find a place to have a drink on your own.
