The red lion is recently reopened after a long period of closure. it has been painted a horrible shade of grey on the outside which I do not think really suits it. The interior is a very strange layout with the bar being on the first floor of the pub with a seating area to the right with the two main rooms being off to the left and right but down a level and towards the front of the pub. The left hand side is reserved for diners but they have a strange policy of only allowing pre booked reservations. The interior is a classic style done in a contemporary way which is better than most modern tacky pub interiors and there is a nice mix of wood and carpet. The beer on offer over I believe six pumps on my visit was Castle Rocks harvest pale and Sherrifs Tipple, black Sheep an Bass. The Bass was well kept and was the best value beer of all the pubs in the surrounding area that day at £3,30 so points for that. It was not terribly busy and the weird layout does not create the best pub atmosphere, not Helene by it being pretty quiet on a Saturday evening but a good solid effort and a good gain to the local area. I would return again if on a trip to Southwell as the beer as good and I know that at leat one of the pumps changes so they do get rotating guests on. Worth a visit if in the area.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Red Lion Inn

This 16th century coaching house was comfortable and had a relaxing atmosphere about it. You take a few steps up into the pub and once through the door, the small central bar is in front of you. The pub consisted of a few rooms off the bar, which gave it an interesting layout. There was an open lit fire and plenty of seating. Staff were pleasant and the ales on offer were Black Sheep and Doom Bar. The Black Sheep was very good. I would have stayed longer if there were some local ales on offer.
