The Newstead Abbey is a located next to Bullwell crossings a five minute walk out of the main high street. It is a large exposed brick building that has recently had new yellow pub signs installed. You enter into a corridor/porch area that has a door into the main bar area that consists of a medium sized bar running down half the length of the right hand side of the room. The room is one large oblong shape with a pool table at the far end that all the seating and bench seating congregates around. The décor is very old and dated and looks relatively unchanged in decades. The curtains are old and dirty, the wallpaper is peeling off and the furnishings are pretty antique. Behind the bar is another room that I believed is let out for functions and the toilets. Just to give you an idea of what these were like, when I asked the landlady where they were she replied” go through the double doors and follow the bad smell”. The beer selection was the usual rubbish keg selection but amazingly they do indeed have a real ale pump and this was clipped with Marstons EPA (£3) and was a very nice well-kept pint and was actually the best pint of the crawl around Bullwell. I must admit to going in a few years ago and seeing a lone Doombar Pump and not daring to try it because I thought absolutely no way would anyone be drinking at it that it must be terrible but In hindsight this was a poor choice as they do keep a decent point here and from all accounts from the landlady they do sell a fair amount of it (and they must do to keep it on and in good nick). Overall this is a pretty average/rough estate pub but the locals and visiting pool team were all very chatty and with the addition of a well-kept real ale id be tempted to say this is the pick of Bulwells pubs. If I ever found myself drinking In Bullwell again I would come here or the Wetherspoons but let’s hope that situation doesn’t arise for a while.

The Newstead Abbey is a decent looking victorian pub that is situated away from the middle of bulwell and it close to lots of council flats.
Once inside this was quite a nice pub with a decent bar and comfortable lounge, this pub used to be a Shipstones tied house and there were two real ales on the bar both Shipstones bitter and mild were very nice drinks here.
This pub is still open and it is one of the few pubs in bulwell that sells real ale.
