The Johnson Arms is located at the side of the main Abbey Street road I n the shdow to the QMC hospital. A former Shipstions pub it still retains its lovely etched shipstons windows, sadly this for me is where the nice features of the pub end. Upon entering theier ir the bar directly in fron and a large square seating area to the right and another further beyond that has been knocked through, there is also a raised area to the left up a level that has more tables and chairs. Unfortunately to me this pub seems unbelievably plain with almost no features or furnishings whatsoever, it looks like it used to be a proper old fashioned pub that’s been gutted and half way through a refurbishment that’s nowhere near completed, just plain walls and carpets and no character which is a shame. However what this pub lacks in design it makes up for in beer choice and quality, on my visit there was the permeant offering of Doombar, as well as a cider from old Rosie, the guest ales consisted of Oakham JHB, dancing ducks dark drake (£3.40) Abeydale Moonshine and Nottingham EPA, the Dark drake and JHB were both in good nick and served in Nonick pint glasses which I like. There is also an award winning beer garden but I have never been in as I have only visited in winter but I do think they have Beer festivals and events in the garden in the summer. Overall this Is a nice pub to have a pint in and gets very busy with students but is not a student pub, merely a proper pub frequented by a lot of students, there is a big difference. I think they could put a bit more effort in with the design of the place as it is plain on a dire scale but is popular and lively and has good beer at a reasonableish price, I would return.

Another good traditional pub and well worth a visit. The pub consists of an L shaped room and bar. There is lots of banquette seating and has a raised seating area on the left. It also hosts a large beer garden. Six ales on offer on our visit, we went for the Welbeck Abbey St James and Abbeydale Deception.

The Johnson Arms is a nice looking pub which still has green tiles at the front and it used to be a Shipstones tied house.
This pub is on a busy road at the back of the queens medical centre. There are too many real ales to mention here i had a drink of Castle Rock Harvest Pale which was very nice there are about another 9 real ales on the bar with some from micro brewerys.
This pub also has a beer festival twice a year and there is also a beer garden at the back for when its warm.
This pub is well worth a visit.
