Will Larter left this review about The Fox

A very attractive 1930s roadside pub on the busy Valley Road. Although clearly refurbished there are some original features still to be seen, and I found the pub to be tastefully presented. The licensee was friendly and happy to talk with me a little about beer and pubs. There were teo hand pumps on the bar with just Abbot on, so I went for a Greene King keg beer, an East Coast IPA, which was neither too cold nor too fizzy. In fact, not a bad drink at all.

Alex Conway left this review about Fox Hotel

A large roadside pub built to serve the estate when there was modernization of parts of the area after the war. This is a Greene king owned pub but not greene king branded, i am not sure it it has a particular spin off brand of Greene king as it seems like a regular not thrills pub. I only sat in the bar area but there was another room to the right thaths been knocked through and much more space being the bar in other rooms that i did not go into. the bar is along the back wall of the main room as you enter stretching quite wide but with very few fronts for such a long bar with large gaps in between. just the normal keg offerings but also San Miguel and Tetley mild available. What pub showed no real ale sold here but to my surprise there were two hand pumps (looking rather new) with Abbot and old speckled hen. Against my better judgement I opted for a pint of the speckled hen for £3.20 that turned out to be up their with some of the best speckled hen i have had, lets not get carried away its not the drink it once was but it shows when kept right it can be rather enjoyable pint.

The pub was quiet on a late Monday afternoon with a handful of regulars and tradesman who had just finished their days work with chatter from the bar staff pleasant but minimal. This was a perfectly acceptable pub to stop inn for a drink or two and was very warm which is not always a given in many pubs.Along with the nice pint I had I could see myself popping in again if ever around the area especially with a lack of immediate competition helped by the fact a decent real ale can be found. but to be honest if not for this its not a world beater but serves its purpose well.

** Update January 2017
The Fox has had a full Greene King makeover and now bears their pub logo on the front which has now been painted white. On the inside they have kept the layout unchanged but completely modernised all the fixtures and fitting making it very bright and airy compared to the worn tattered look of old. Nice new tables and chairs are accompanied by grey carpets with the games room to the right hard wooden floors. This place is now a bit to modern and tacky for my liking but compared to what it was before it is about the same standard, a bit to modern compared to a bit too old and warn so overall no real change in the quality of the venue but they now do more of a food trade that looks to be appealing more to younger people and families. The beer selection is exactly the same with Abbot and Speckled hen, I had Keg Tetley’s Mild this time just to change thinks up a bit at £2.90 and this was ok. Worth a flying visit still but nothing special.
