Second visit (7/11/23):

Having found this pub to be my favourite pub on my last visit to Mansfield, I was eager to pay it a return visit. Whilst my last visit was very quiet on a Wednesday evening, I wasn't quite sure what to expect on a Tuesday evening. However, my fears were soon allayed, as we'd stumbled on a large group of people enjoying a folk singing session in the main bar.

This time, I retreated to the snug at the front and were soon joined by several other drinkers filling the room. The atmosphere was much livelier than on my previous visit. It is a lovely pub to enjoy a drink. The only slight negative was that the beer selection wasn't quite as good as my last visit, with no dark beer and no cider that I could see this time. The selection was Woodforde's Bure Gold & Nog, Full Mash Summit's View & Dancing Duck Abduction.

Original Visit (23/3/22):

As you'd probably guess from the name, the Railway is very convenient for Mansfield's railway station. It's an old building that looks a little out of place amidst the nearby modern retail developments, the sort of place that developers love to buy up and demolish.

I was surprised to see this small boozer having no customers at all on my Wednesday evening visit. There are a couple of rooms at the front, a small snug on the left-hand side and an equally small dining room on the right. Beyond is another small room for drinkers with access to the toilets and also containing the principle servery.

A couple of friendly dogs were on hand to announce my presence to the landlady who soon arrived to serve me. 4 real ales were on - Welbeck Abbey Kaiser & Red Feather, Full Mash Whistlin' Dixie & North Riding Ice Cream Porter. In my final pub of the day, I'd also finally located a real cider here - Weston's Old Rosie.

I went for the Ice Cream Porter, which turned out to be my favourite beer of the day. The rear room is quite a cosy place to sit and I could have imagined spending quite a bit of time here, as one of the dogs settled down on my lap, with the other also demanding fuss.

Pub of the day in Nottinghamshire, which deserves to have more customers than just myself.

An excellent and largely unspoilt former Batemans pub with many rooms, generally well lived-in (not to say slightly tatty) but none the worse for that. I think I counted at least 5 separate areas, plus two outside sections. The well-priced beers change regularly, often featuring Pheasantry and Bradfield brews, and are well-kept by the friendly and efficient staff. The home-made, properly-traditional pub food is highly recommended and also very good value. One of the few things in Mansfield worth getting off the train for.

A samll but multi-roomed pub few minutes' walk from Field Mill, Mansfield Town's ground, the Railway has the outward appearance of a Batemans pub, but there are no Wainfleet beers on sale here these days. There are four hand pumps available on the small bar, with a good spread of styles: Castle Rock Red Riding Hood, Double Top Old Stoneface, Scribblers Beerfest at Tiffany's and Banks's Sunbeam. I enjoyed my half of the Scribblers, a brewery I hadn't come across before. There was some minor refurbishment going on, but service was being maintained by the friendly staff. It can get busy, especially when there's football on, and I did once walk out without getting served as there was such a scrum at the bar. If you can get here at a quieter time though, it's definitely worth a visit.
