Quinno _ left this review about The Heart of Northumberland

A fairly dim and dowdy place with the numerous wood box wall panelling painted an ill-advised cold blue colour. GBG listed, five sticks with three on, 2x Allendale and TTL. My Golden Plover was par (NBSS 3) although served in some soppy 80s lager flute. Enjoyed the awkward stand-off between staff and a pair of awkward squad customers, who wanted something bespoke off the menu (think cheese sandwich man from Fawlty Towers); they were politely declined and they left in a huff. Anyway I wouldn’t feel the need to do this one again, GBG or no.

Formerly the Heart of All England, which might have seemed nonsensical given Hexham's geographical position, but I'm not sure there was any need to change it. (There's a race at Hexham's racecourse with the same name, so I guess it's a traditional name for the area.) A lot of money was spent doing the place up, according to something in the local paper, but they'd have been better off doing something about the atmosphere, which is too much cafe bar or gastropub for my liking, not to mention all that Wedgwood blue paint both inside and out. (Surely that can't be original fielded wood panelling that's been painted over?)

And if you're going to have five hand pumps with mostly local beers on the bar, it's as well to make sure they're in tip top condition. My Allendale Pennine Pale was very slow to clear after pouring and tasted a bit tart to me, but being unfamiliar with the beer I wasn't best placed to challenge it; suffice to say I was left with a slightly sour taste in my mouth for a couple of hours after drinking it. Obviously as a brief visitor to the town, I'm in no position to say how the pub should be run, and perhaps it's more publike at times - it would need to be to shift enough of those five beers to be able to sell it in good condition.

Gastro pub, well its more restaurant than somewhere you would just go for a drink due to the layout. Expensive and rather average. However, the beer choice is not formula and the quality is good, so a couple of extra marks for this.

Very friendly local town pub not far from the Market Square. Comfortable inside, friendly staff. Offers good food and on my visit two ales on handpull, Black Sheep and Hadrian and Border Farne Island.
