Arriving in Haltwhistle at 12:30 on Wednesday it was disappointing to find that this pub does not open until 3:30.

The Black Bull is an historic pub close to Hadrian's Wall and is situated down a short cobbled path from the market place. This old pub is popular with locals and ramblers alike and has a low beamed ceiling, open fire, plenty of horse brasses plus a fine selection of 6 cask beers. The pub has a good reputation for fine food which is locally sourced and produced.
Arrived around 11-35 am and although the pub was not officially open the landlord took pity on me and kindly opened the bar from which had an excellent drink of the York Brewery's Ghost Ale.
Definitely worth a visit if in the area

A proper traditional pub, with a lot of history behind it. The foundations date back to the 13th century, was raised to the ground by the Border Reevers and rebuilt around the 17th century by the local Monks. Consists of a large lounge with bar as you enter and also has an adjoining dining room. Very friendly and welcoming. Six ales on, York Brewery Scrum Down, Sheph erd Neame Bishops Finger, Courage, Theakston, Camerons Best and Camerons Strong Arm which was fab. Will defo return.

Called into this 2010 Good Beer Guide pub and found 6 ales on, mainly from the bigger well known breweries, but was told they are rotated with only Caledonian Deuchers being a regular as it is a good session beer. Stone walls and timbered ceiling with brasses make it a charming pub and we were welcomed. Enjoyed Ringwood Fortyniner and Theakston Grouse Beater.

Here For Beer left this review about The Black Bull

tucked away just off the market place, the Black Bull does great cask beers, and provides a real homely feel.
the first time i went we enjoyed a famous hour and a half watching england tear australia to pieces in the ashes victory at Trent Bridge on a portable TV!
