Real Ale Ray left this review about Schooner Hotel

They now have two VIP Brewery ales from Alnwick on handpump. My VIP bitter at 4% was tasteless and I left half of it, which the barman didn't take too well. We went to the back room, where there was a pool table and TV. We found the bar to be dark and uninspiring.

Sorry but I also have to be harsh. From the outside the Schooner inn is very inviting, with its historic white frontage and prime position on Northumberland St. But when you step inside the overriding feeling is “Oh dear”.
The internal hotel bar has a dated décor and if I was to say it has a “lived in feel”, that would be being very polite. But the real fun comes when you go to move outside. Here initially you find the ugly two-part side extension with its cheap furniture referred to below, and some building idiosyncrasies that lead you to believe that no expense was ever considered when this was thrown up, let alone spared.
And then you move out to the tatty patio garden which could provide an excellent view of the Aln Estuary if you could actually see it over the top of the plastic red building barrier and assorted building rubble beyond.
Perhaps the day could be saved by the Schooner Inn having a range of well-kept local Northumberland Real ales ?. But unfortunately here again disappointment awaits. Only one of the two handpumps was in use dispensing Holt Humdinger, which frankly is not a good beer at the best of times, but what came out of the pump was truly awful.
The service was very efficient and very friendly and no complaints there. But in these tough economic times the standard of what makes a good pub restaurant has moved on and although a smiling friendly barmaid always helps, expectation is now greater than just that and I am afraid to say the Schooner Inn has been left behind.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Schooner Hotel

From the road, a fine looking former coaching inn retaining its historic frontage. However, if you venture beyond the traditional archway one finds an ugly two-part side extension housing the cheap furniture in the dining area and games room. Rather tatty patio beer garden further down the side (with an overgrown grassed area beyon). Inside, only one of the two hotel bars was open, and just one of the two handpumps was working - a dull half of Doom Bar cost £1.65. Overall, this place promised quite a lot but delivered very little. (NB - Review dates from August 2012.)

i recently stayed at this hotel for a function the young girls that worked here were really friendly and seemed to give a good service(but this is the only positive i can find for this place) , the food in the bar was ok although heavily overpriced for a family of 4 a sandwich and a coke each it cost £30.00 which is daylight robbery. we stayed in a family room which cost £110 for a night inc breakfast which i must say for that money i expect better. the rooms were dated carpets old and general decor throughout the rooms were shabby and uncared for the bed was uncomfortable and no shower in the room. at 1230 midnight we were awaken by a group of ghosthunters talking in the hallway making loud noises and using walkie talkies this continued until 3am even though we had askled them to be quiet there had been no mention of this upon check in, and they take payment in full from you upon arrival obviously so you cannot complain the morning after as the reception area was all locked up and just a bowl to leave your keys on checkout. if you value yopur money and want a good nights sleep i would strongly recommend not staying at this place because service is not the key they just want your money nothing else
