A Charles Wells pub, the exterior is attractively decorated in burgundy and cream. A nice two-roomer inside, there’s a smaller left bar with only one pump labelled. Northants skittles located here. The larger main bar is to the right, which also hosts (inevitably) a dining area and was cosy and tidy. A compact but well-done grassed garden is to the rear. Three ales on; Wells Eagle IPA, Youngs Bitter and Castle Rock Preservation, the latter of which was in good nick. Friendly locals and a convivial atmosphere with a plant sale underway. We rather liked this pub, one of those unexpected good hits. 7.5
