We were intending to investigate the allegedly open Fitzgerald but that clearly conked out some time ago. No matter, the allegedly conked out Royal Oak was showing signs of life. The local Camra branch clearly doesn't get out much. Anyway, it's under new management and has been smartened up nicely.

Pride and Wherry on the pumps, attractively, if ineptly served: I didn't have the heart to fuss about short measure. And the Wherry was in decent form. So yeah, not bad as a local, but a more ambitious beer choice would be nice.

September 2020 notes

Looks like it's been allowed to go to seed since Gill visited. Piles of old tat around outside and untended garden - the overgrown shrubs in the borders suggest it was lovely once - didn't inspire confidence, nor did the partially erected tent - the frame was there but not the canvas. Then a filthy dirty smokers shed. Inside was OKish, and the cheerfully served Towcester Mill Mill Race was a nice drink.

Covid regs present and correct, but the overall scruffiness didn't make a return visit likely.

Enjoyed our visit yesterday to this friendly locals pub that features in the 2019 Good Beer Guide. It was a royalist pub in the Battle of Naseby and this is reflected in the decor. Towcester Mill operate the pub, and we enjoyed both their Crooked Hooker and Winter Ale.

The Royal Oak is a pleasant enough village boozer but I only ever seem to pay flying visits so details are sparse.
It's an unremarkable whitewashed building with the bulk of the pub being a one room open plan affair which wraps around a central bar. I vaguely remember a couple of small rooms at the back from previous visits if you wanted a quiet spot.
My visits have all been on Saturday evenings when there seem to be a few locals around but the place has never been truly busy which makes the range of ales offered admirable. I assume that they manage a gentle trade throughout the week as the beer I've had here has always been in good nick and Naseby is a reasonable size village with few alternatives.
Five handpumps offered Old Speckled Hen, Spitfire, Pedigree, Great Oakley Wagtail and an exceptional Oakham Bishops Farewell. Heavy on the nationals but the latter two are fairly local and both are well respected breweries.
I've never seen any food offered or anyone eating but I've never been at lunchtime.
A solid stop if passing and I'd be happy to slip in again for either an Oakham or Great Oakley beer.

A friendly well run pub with a fine selection of regularly changeing real ales. At least one Oakham beer is normally available, need I say more? Reasonably priced bar meals also served.
