Blue Scrumpy left this review about Rowell Charter Inn

I initially arrived here on a Friday lunchtime. Their website states that they open from midday on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, I soon found it to be closed with opening times listed on the door to be 4pm.

I returned later in the day to find a very busy pub with a good selection of beers and knowledgeable owners. From a distance, the pub enjoys a prominent corner location and looks quite impressive. As you get closer, the car park area to the side starts to look a little ramshackle and could do with a spruce up.

Once inside however, the atmosphere is both friendly and lively. Customers appeared to be almost all local, with a good mix of middle aged and elderly punters. With 6 changing beers, I am surprised that the pub has not featured in the Good Beer Guide since 2016. On my visit, there were Langton Inclined Plane, Hopback Mayfly, Castle Rock Elsie Mo, Church End Fallen Angel, Grainstore Rutland Beast & Tring Fanny Ebbs. I couldn't see any sign of a real cider, but my Rutland Beast was a much welcomed dark beer.

Seating is arranged around the bar, with the entrance from the car park being at a slightly higher level than the front of the building. There was also a dark corner area at the opposite side also on the higher level. I ended up sitting there, as all other tables were taken in what is quite a spacious interior.

Despite my initial disappointment at finding the pub closed when the pub's own website listed it as open, I found this to be another good Northamptonshire pub.

This is a multi-building pub, that is in the GBG. Constructed of irregular stone blocks with sash windows, it is said to date to the 17th century. The interior has three areas. The small lounge, in cream, with a large stone fireplace is off to the left on entry. It has a TV (not on) and old pictures on the walls. The bar is to the right, again, with a large fireplace and is in cream and stone. Mixed pictures are on the walls. An acoustic folkish band were playing music here, which i really enjoyed. The back room has a bar-billiard table and is in cream and red, with print, plates and old photos on the walls. Beer; usual tap stuff with 6 real ales on. Sadly, i was beginning to feel a little unwell and didn't note them, other than my Bateman's Salem Porter, which i nursed for the evening. Class, must go back when feeling better!

The Rowell Charter Inn is a nice looking stone built pub, that is a short walk from Rothwells shopping area.
The front door is out of use,the main entrance is on the left side, this takes you into a smallish square shaped area with the bar facing, this area had a few tables and chairs and a large fire place not in use, there was another room down a few steps to the right, this was a long narrow room which runs the width of the pub,the seating was comfy bench type and chairs, there was another room to the far right through a doorway, all rooms were carpeted.
There was a very good choice of real ales on the bar, with four on the upper bar and four more in the lower rooms bar,i had a drink of Oldershaws Beattys Tonic which was a very nice well kept beer, the other beers i noted were Star Equinox,Dogs Bollocks,Adnams Ghost Ship,J Church Seekers Blood,Rothwell Paddy's best bitter and Doom Bar.
The pub was fairly busy on our early Saturday dinner visit.
This is a really nice pub that was warm on a cold day, with a great choice of micro beers on the bar.
Our pub of the day, well worth a visit.
