Village pub on the main road through Charwelton that has an upmarket food offering, in addition to serving a real ale.

We were initially planning to eat here, but the posh menu put us off a little. Nevertheless, service and the clientele didn't seem pretentious. So, it's probably serves a purpose as being a village local for drinkers (apparently it is owned by the community), in addition to attracting diners from further afield.

The real ale was North Cotswold Fosseway Flanker. There were also a couple of craft beers from SALT - Jute & Huckaback. There is a public bar and a separate restaurant, with a lounge-type area in between.

Perhaps a little scathing exactly two years ago below. A delicious drink of Shagweaver (N Cotswold) brought out to us as we sat out front, Covid regulations meticulously observed, and prices seem to have got more reasonable, £3.95 is fine for where we are.

There were braver souls than us inside the pub, we'd prefer to remain alive so we're keeping to the gardens for now

Summer 2018 notes

Charwelton's biggest claim to fame is probably the BT tower which is visible from miles around. Other than that it's a tiny village near the source of the Cherwell. The traditonal Cotswold stone pub is on the main road which skirts the village's western side, and has existed for maybe five hundred years. After a period of closure it's now in the hands of a local cooperative, who have turned it into a Michelin listed restaurant with a reasonably pubby bar on the side. It is all intensely gastrified, of course, and the bar bit is short on usable furniture unless you can cope with low sofas or highchairs, and you need a lot of money. Eight quid for a pint and a half of very pleasant Nobby's bitter (that's all there was) and a pack of lactose-free cheese (??) and onion is pushing it. You looking at over a tenner for a granded-up sandwich.

This is a fairly remote, un-touristed area, and I do wonder if there's the custom round here for somewhere so self-consciously middle-class. But if it's a nice day the tables outside are pleasant to linger at if your travelling this way.

I am a regular visitor of the Fox & Hounds Charwelton and the food there is amazing!! Nice fresh home made food with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Try the Mousakka! Well worth the journey.
