Hidden away from the main tourist area, this is up the hill from the station within the back streets of an old part of town.

Small, 2 areas for seating, its a back street local but clean, tidy, welcoming type of pub. Still very traditional, with darts and TVs, and all the better for it.

Two real ales from national range.

It's a bit of a different atmosphere in the FILO these days, but the Ale is still very good. As ever the Cameron's Strongarm remains the best seller. In addition the Hobgoblin is an excellent alternative. The Black sheep has now gone and Tetley's Cask has made a welcome return.

After a temporary closure this little pub will re-open at 6pm on the evening of Monday 5th September 2011. Good news indeed!

Looks like the upholstery refurbishment is cancelled, but the Ale is still very good.

This little pub has changed hands recently and although the Cameron's Strongarm is retained, the Tetley's Cask has been replaced with Black Sheep Ale and Hobgoblin. In addition, a rolling Guest Ale is available. All for just £2.70 a pint, which is much better than the inflated Whitby town centre prices! The upholstery and carpet will be renewed soon I understand, which is the only downside at the moment to this friendly local's pub.

General Staal left this review about The First In Last Out

Mrs Staal and I visited this pub, which is a good walk out of the town centre, because I had heard good things about the place and it was a pub I had never been to before.

It is a typical Victorian back street boozer. I found it perfectly acceptible. Mrs Staal didn't like the place. She thought it 'needed a good clean'. She commented on 'threadbare seats'. I thought the bar staff were very friendly and the two other punters were also very friendly.

However, for a pub out of the town centre, the range of beer was bog standard. Cameron's Strongarm and Tetley's were the real ales. The usual stuff was also served.

Both of these are available in the town itself, and pubs like the Station and the Endeavour have a better range.

The Elsinore has the same range and is easier to put into a crawl.

So, in short, while there is nothing wrong with the First In Last Out, there is nothing about it to pull in a visitor to Whitby. However, if I lived in the Victorian estate at the centre of which the First In Last Out is situated, I believe I would be a regular.

The latest news is that this little pub is included in the 2011 Good Beer Guide! Well done to Ann and Paul.

This little real ale pub, is off the tourist trail, but well worth a visit and it's only a five minute walk from the town centre. Excellent pint of Cameron's Strongarm and Tetley's Bitter with John Smiths Extra Smooth also available. Between April and October there is usually a guest ale available. Recently they have had Timothy Taylors Landlord, Wychwoods Hobgoblin and Spitfire.

Enjoy a pint with the local Whitby folk and sample the live Folk music sessions every Tuesday evening and the first Saturday evening of each month.

This little pub was first included in the 2009 Good Beer Guide, and quite right too, and now its included in the 2010 Guide.

Since the new Landlord took over, the pub is starting to get a bit of care and attention with the external paintwork being the first to benefit, and the upholstery is to be refurbished soon.

Soup Dragon left this review about The First In Last Out

We visited this pub on the advice of the GBG and have to say i was a little disappointed. A nice white exterior, with red paintwork, the pub itself is fine, the interior being very 1970s (which is great as far as i was concerned) and the service being friendly.

It was very quiet when we visited - around 7pm

Sadly, there wasnt much choice in the real ales stakes - Teltley Cask (as tasteless as the keg stuff they do), and, what i had, the Strongarm, which is class.

I think i just hoped for more, so, I may be being unfair to this place - i actually hope i am. But if the Strongarm was off, i would leave, simple as that.
