An attractive Georgian place on the market square, with a couple of nice rooms and a good staircase on the way in. After that it goes downhill, with a warren of small rooms in a cluttered layout and a surprisingly small bar to the side, although a large mirror at the end helps deceive the eye. On closer inspection the 7 handpumps had two promoting the boxed ciders in the fridge with the usual tedious trio, just leaving Daleside Blonde and a collab special as worth trying. Service was also somewhat hit and miss. I suppose it just about does its job as a Spoons but certainly not one of the best.

Visited last Thursday afternoon. Seven pumps offering the Spoons Trio, Witchfinder General by Moorhouse's, Blonde Witch by Moorhouse's, something by Rudgate and Black Dragon Cider (which had a paper pump label stuck over a proper one). All guest ales £1.99 a pint (£1 for a half) except for the cider.

Not as busy as it has been on previous visits but a fair few customers in. The horrific kids' play area from the room at the front appears to have gone and is now a quieter seating area. In fact it almost felt like a pensioner exclusive room.

The guy serving seemed a bit odd. A woman serving food then went and did the hourly check on the bogs. Which was nice. I'm sure she washed her hands afterwards.

The Witchfinder General I had was pretty unremarkable. Every now and then there seemed to be a slight whisky taste to it, and I am not sure if it was meant to have.

An OK Spoons but the ale selection is not always as good as it could be.

Nice old building that has been given the Spoons makeover. 4 guests on when I called in.

Bigger than it looks with a bar to the left. Many rooms down steps to the right and an outside area. Trouble was - the beer. Only seven pumps and not much choice. A poorish Spoons.

Like many of the JDW Hotels the bar here is a rambling old place as described below. I did notice that the Hotel Reception was signposted as being through the rear patio which makes me wonder if the rooms are a new build or another building. It was fairly quiet on a Tuesday afternoon.
The bar only has seven hand pumps which had three available soon, the JDW Trio Of Doom and Rudgate Patriot Pale. I went for the Patriot Pale which was in good nick but not exactly inspiring.
This may have a much better interior than the vast majority of JDWs but a pathetic beer choice like that makes it a complete waste of time.

It's a good little JDW is this. One main room with a number of smaller rooms down a few steps that can all be hired out for the evening. The small rooms are all very well decorated with bureaus & bookshelves around the place. The beer range wasn't great and the three "guest" beers were all from established regionals. Having said that I had 4 pints in here over the day and evening and all were in good nick. Service seeme pretty efficient for a JDW and all the tables were cleaned as soon as people left. However, be warned, we called in on a hot Saturday afternoon recently and saw several of the largest women in the world wearing tiny short skirts and cropped tops.

above average Wetherspoons in a sympathetically converted famous old hotel. Many features of the hotel are retained especially at the front of the building. Usual varied choice of beers on keg and handpump including a couple from local brewers and kept in top form. Short staffed of course but those few employed are very efficient, tables cleared quickly and I personally saw someone manage to buy a drink in less than four minutes.
