Marooned in a residential area of awkward one-way streets, this stately Victorian building houses a good old-school Brewers' Tudor sort of pub, with multiple little areas round the bar. Furnishings are entirely traditional, peripheral benches abound and there is a pleasing amount of dark woodwork. A few TVs add a slightly jarring note but are easily avoided. Beers are mainly from Theakstons, including XB, Old Peculier and Lightfoot, with Ghost Ship as a guest and in very good nick.

The beer range seems to be slipping back into mainstream again. 3 beers on, none very interesting. I had a pint of Caledonian Golden XPA which was OK. It was dead as a post on a Wednesday lunchtime and we were the only 2 people in during our 30 minute visit. Needs a boost from somewhere to get it moving again.

Improved range of beer and customer service when we called in last week. The pint of Adnams Gunhill was in good nick. Looks to have had a bit of a spruce up since last time we were here. Still not one of our favourite pubs in Scarborough, but it's improving. We'll probably call in again next time we're in the area on this showing. Up a couple of points for me.

Decent range of beers when I called and the Black Sheep was OK but nothing special. The crowd that were in were a bit boisterous and loud. Due to the shape of the place it's pretty difficult to get from one side to the other when even averagely busy. Lots' of better places in Scarborough.
