An old pub just off the market square aimed squarely at the locals. The slightly decrepit interior has been tarted up with odd trimmings, like random cupboard fronts, but revealing some ancient brickwork beneath. Several large screens dominate proceedings, while overloud (admittedly rather good) music was being played. A DJ booth is tucked in at the back and there is a games room and garden signed to the rear (not visited). No cask ales now, just John Smiths and Neck Oil as bitters with mundane lagers. Valid for its own market I suppose, but I didn't find it particularly welcoming or pleasant.

Sadly the good things didn’t last here, it occasionally still tries cask beer but fails miserably - the punters here are universally lager or smooth drinkers, the same is true across most of Ripon’s pubs with only six pubs selling any drinkable cask and one of them is the ‘spoons so a bit variable.

A new lease of life with a new manager apparently. The beer quality has been transformed from warm soup into something very drinkable. The three pulls have Black Sheep Bitter and changing beers from nearby brewer Pennine. This is one to watch.

The Wetherspoons effect seems to have hit the Hornblower, a wash and brush up plus the addition of three handpumps with Black Sheep, Bombardier and Hobgoblin at competitive prices (£2.10 – £2.20) although a sign outside says Cask Ale from £1.99. The ale quality wasn't as close to JDWs as the pricing though. They are also doing a new menu and introducing breakfasts.

Dreadful would probably be the first word that springs to the mind of a discerning beer drinker BUT enter this pub with an open mind and it's not so bad. At first sight there is little going for this place with its grey painted frontage - awful decor, big telly screens everywhere and a boring range of Scottish and Newcastle's beers plus Carling and Tetley's Smooth, no cask beer in sight. However there are usually lots of young and not so young, lively customers, socialising and enjoying themselves, just what a pub is for. This is actually a rather good pub, beer notwithstanding. The staff are mega efficient but do insist on not providing a glass with bottled beer. Formerly called the Star, it was renamed after a local official who blows his horn every night at 9 o'clock in the city's market square in an ancient "setting the watch" ceremony.

Summer 2010

Now selling Theakstons Best on the single handpump.

Its been a few years since i last was in ye hornblower tavern but i was the resident disc jockey there, very lively, young pub, customers with good crowd.
Would recommend, this establishment back then 1997 had as you walked in to your right a long bar with a conservatory at rear of the pub, plenty of room to walk around, staff very polite and professional, toilets to the rear.
