Same basic layout as many years ago but a lick of grey plague paint, new upholstery and woodwork gives a fresh look. Minimalist decor of plain white walls with old photos of Ripon. There’s a pull down screen where the trophy cabinet was. Six pulls with Theakston Best, Doombar and 61 Deep as well as two little T-bars of the usual lagers, a smooth and a cider, there’s also a Guinness fount and a Guinness USB thingy. My Theakston’s was just on the turn, not enough to take back but… The pool table is still there as are games machines. Chocolate bars and usual snacks are sold as well as scratchings from a machine on the bar, I didn’t ask for any. Still pretty much a locals pub.

GBG listed for the last couple of years, hard to find for a visitor to the city but not too far from the One-Eyed Rat. Victorian building set on a corner in a residential area near the fire and ambulance stations. A single large room brightly decorated in red and cream, horse brasses and china mugs over the bar, a Tetley's clock and big cabinet full of trophys above the fire, in a good way this reminds me a bit of some pubs 30 years ago, a real locals pub in spite of its CAMRA listing. Pool table at one end and a telly at the other, friendly locals and staff. Fair choice of beers on hand pull all in good order but nothing very exciting, John Smith's Cask, Theakstons Best, Deuchars IPA and the best of the bunch John Smith's Magnet. Apparently brewed at Camerons you wouldn't think it came from the same stable as the Cask, which is supposedly contract brewed by Holts. Bit of a stale doggy smell about the place. Usual suspects for lager etc.
