Hambleton have given up renting here and it’s under new management, beer quality is better than for some time although the choice is a bit “Ripon”, Theakstons plus a couple from Marstons. Internally much the same, some seating has been added in the lobby including what looks like an old Pac-Man or Space Invaders machine table, I didn’t try it out cos I was only any good at Asteroids.

Update October 2013
Internally much the same but now rented by Hambleton Ales as their Brewery Tap, beer quality is excellent, still serving Theakstons Best but with three beers from the Hambleton stable (Whitby and Village Brewer as well as Hambleton).

October 2009
Known locally as the King Billy, (actually William III's nickname but ...) Large double fronted pub noted for a high turnover of landlords/managers. Splendid West Riding Brewery stained glass windows although the interior has been messed about a little. The bar is to the right as you go in through a typical West Riding drinking lobby, the left hand room is the pool room. An odd shaped bar due to some ill advised wall removal. Just a cut above being a basic boozer, a comfortable and friendly pub with mainly working men as customers. Advertises itself as “Ripon's only sports bar” - it has some framed signed rugby shirts, a dart board and a big telly showing Sky sports; so it can get rammed when there's something on. For your drinking delight they offer Theakston's lacklustre best bitter which is kept well, the usual lagers n stuff also available.
