I thought this was quite smart for a market square pub, which can often be a little rough and smell of cigarette smoke on customers' clothes, if not actually drifting in from the doorway. None of that here, I'm pleased to report, and I found things to like in the furnishings and decor, with the bar counter and the floor tiles being particularly attractive. The beer was a choice of Boltmaker or Landlord; I went for the former, which was perhaps not quite on form - could have done with sitting in the cellar a couple of days longer. Could have done with being a bit cheaper too - £2.35 for a half is not a price I am used to paying in Yorkshire. (A pint of Landlord was £2.40 in the Craft Union pub just around the corner!)

First visit for a while and a bit depressing, much as before but with lousy beer quality on this visit, not undrinkable but it only went down with my tastebuds numbed with dry roasted nuts. Mind you every other bugger in the place was on keg, lesson there guys.

Under new management and the beer range has improved as well as the quality, in addition to the John Smiths Cask you should find Theakstons XB, Taylors Landlord and perhaps Taylors Golden Best. Little else has changed but it's a much nicer place to drink now.

IYBMADIWTY means If You Buy Me A Drink I Will Tell You. You owe me a pint OB. We walked into this pub and the smell of cigarette smoke and sweat hit us as soon as we entered. The other half said "I don't think so, do you" so we left.

Low ceilings, dark wood, tiled bar, and victorian features combine to make a characterful pub with two bars. The beer sadly was chewy John Smiths Cask, the only ale available, along with the usual kegs. The two bars are broadly similar, to the right is more dining oriented and has a flag floor, the left hand one more sparcely furnished and has a boarded floor. Pictures and photos of old Knaresborough and a few brass nicknacks and horsebrasses in the normal pub style. There is a cryptic message over the door between the bars reading IYBMADIWTY! , I didn't get the chance to ask its meaning but it's more fun to make up your own anyway.

This pub is on the market place and once inside the pub was fairly smart and very quiet on my visit.
There was only one real ale on the bar this was John Smiths cask and this was decent enough.
