Will Larter left this review about George & Dragon Inn

Just outside the town centre and advertised as not opening until 2pm on a Saturday, this pub still had closed doors and no lights when I approached at a few minutes past, so I went to the Half Moon down by the river instead. When I walked past half an hour later it was open, but I was on my way to the first game of the season, Knaresborough Town v Hallam so had to postpone my visit until after the game. It was quite busy at 5pm, with quite a few of the locals watching a game on TV and some playing pool. The two large and slightly bowed windows either side of the front door make it a certainty that there were originally two rooms here, but it's now one large space with the bar centrally placed. I had a choice of Tetleys or Daleside Blonde on hand pump (with one more turned around and another vacant), and my swift half of Tetleys was better than expected.

From the outside, you would think this pub would have a traditional and inviting interior. Once through the doors, you are overpowered by a loud tartan carpet and ghastly painted walls, which clashed with everything. Also, the pub has a very clicky atmosphere with the regulars stuck around the corner of the bar. A boring Sam Smith's house. Would not return.

Under new management since my last review, the beer quality has improved and it seems to stick to John Smiths Cask and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin as the regulars with a guest or two. A particularly "gifted" bunch like to block not only the bar but the only door as well.

Also known as 'the Top House'. Comfy one room pub serving John Smith's Cask and three or four guests; there were beers from Wold Top, Naylors and York when I visited, a fifth pull was not in use. There is a blackboard showing the choices but its presence totally escaped me until pointed out by the friendly barman. Sadly the York Guzzler was rather flat and dull in spite of being assured it was fresh on. Traditional bench seats and tables with a pool table at one end and a couple of large TVs. Décor is understated with a few old photos of Knaresborough. This pub seems a little more in tune with the tourist trade than a number of Knaresborough pubs which seem to cater mainly for the locals.
