A big Nicholson's pub in an imposing grade II listed building, once a spa. Inside it is rather more downmarket than most Nicholson's, perhaps due to the clientele or the number of sports screens (they may be connected). Either way there was an acceptable range of ales on: Landlord, Titanic Plum Porter, Leeds Pale, Doom Bar and the house beer, with Wainwright, Black Sheep and something from Laines to follow. Somehow doesn't feel quite as nice as some of the other pubs in the area but ok on a crawl.

No changes since the plague hit us, the staff might be a bit more surly, the games machines may have changed as has the beer range although it’s maybe more local (Timmy Taylors, Black Sheep, Northern Monk, and Leeds Brewery; alongside the St Austell and Fullers) otherwise pretty much aziz.

The Alexandra Hotel in Harrogate is a little walk out of the centre of the town Centre and is located at the side of the busty main road. It is the only Nicholson’s pub in Harrogate so I was looking forward to trying it as unusually like their offerings. The pub is completely bare boarded and is one plain open plan room with a large square bar in the left hand corner that takes up a large proportion of the space. There is also a slight partition to the right that give sway to a seating area at the back end of the pub. The space in front of the bar is quite empty which left a lot of space in the middle of the pub quite empty. This was not the cosiest of places and the limited decor left it feeling a little bland and uncomfortable especially with large glass windows all round and very bright inside lights. Not the cosy traditional boozer I have come to expect from Nicholson’s. There was a good selection of pumps on the bar that were duplicated on the right hand side that featured their house pale, Great heck Dave and Leeds Pale as well as a few more I didn’t note but nothing too exciting. I opted for the Dave that was far too cold and was sour which left a bad taste in my mouth especially as I had been charged £3.80 form it! It was returned and swapped for a Leeds pale that was kept in pretty good shape. Overall pretty disappointed with this place. There are much better traditional pubs in Harrogate and it seems the locals/Tourists know this as well as this place was very quiet in the evening when I Went. It does do ma good range of ales that when kept right are pretty nice but obviously the odd stinker gets through which can put you off. I think this place was let down most of all by lack of customers creating atmosphere. I predict that at a busier time it could potentially be a lot better but unfortunately on my visit it was not the best. Overall decisively average but gets its marks fro having a good solid ale line up that when right was very pleasant. potentially worth a return visit under the right circumstances, just scrapes a 7.

Expensively refurbished and now run by M&B under their Nicholsons brand, as used for their larger more traditionally oriented pubs. Two banks of pulls: an eight on the short face and two of four on the longer face of the L shaped counter plus two discreet rows of discrete keg founts of national standards. Cask ales, which were doubled up, came from Sharps, Wychwood and Rudgate plus the house Pale Ale from St Austell and a couple of cask beers from smaller and more distant Brewers. Two machines and two screens on a sports channel remain from the previous sports pub incarnation, as do the raised areas in each corner. The rear areas are separated rooms with glass walls. Finished in an elegant high Victorian style with very dark grey walls and woodwork, cream ceilings and a tiled floor round the counter. Fin de Siecle light fittings and original victorian features enhance the look. The room is decorated with many prints and black & white photos of the Harrogate area as well as a small painting of Queen Alexandra herself as Princess of Wales. Furnished mainly with tall tables and stools with normal size furniture in the raised areas. Staff are still finding their feet but should work out ok, nothing to complain out in the beer quality either, Nicholsons being fairly trust-worthy.

ROB Camra left this review about The Alexandra Pizza Kitchen & Bar

Much improved after the refurbishment, some of the clientele from our last visit seem to have been refurbished as well. The decor is now much more upmarket, it could hardly have gone lower. The pub was still very busy on our Friday night visit and Ms CAMRA quite liked it this time around so we ended up having two drinks each here. Despite the busy pub the service was good and my two pints both from Daleside, Blonde & Square Rigger, were both in good condition. I'm also assured that the red wine is also good. It seems to have been turned around in here from a laddish culture to a more couple orientated place. We'll probably call back next time we're in Harrogate.

Very large pub with entrances on both Prospect Place and John Street. Sells a couple of changing cask ales often from Daleside. Majors on sport and food, there are loads of TVs all around showing all the live matches. Not very impressed with the food as it was slow coming, was nowhere near as good as it sounded and was overpriced for what you get. You can hardly get through the door at weekends and the clientele are a bit boisterous to say the least. Not really my type of place.

After a short spell closed for a refurbishment the Alexandra has reopened with added pizza. The refurb' has been carried out with a very light touch and the only changes seem to be to the decor, as the old pictures were auctioned off to the customers, and the addition of the pizza kitchen. Still with three pumps usually with decent Copper Dragon and Daleside beers plus the usual kegs.. All the big screens are still in place and live music continues.

Not what you might expect entering the pub from the John Street end, a very big room more like a city centre pub than most in Harrogate. Beer wise a keg range much as found anywhere although maybe a little more choice, and two well kept cask beers, local lads Daleside and Copper Dragon on my visit. Multiple big screens on various different channels spread round the room with lots of table and chair style seating, the tables have brass numbers for food orders but I didn't eat here. The staff are young and seem a bit inexperienced hence some short measures here but there are enough of them to cope with reasonable customer levels even if some of the punters are a bit dodgy looking. Nothing much to praise or complain about. There is a pool table at one end and live music here every Thursday which is a good thing in itself.

Alan Winfield left this review about The Alex

The Alexandra is a large looking pub that has got quite a few silver tables and chairs at the front for warm weather.
I went in a largish room that was fairly quiet on my visit and there were two real ales on the bar i had a drink of Daleside Blonde and this was a decent drink the other beer was Roosters YPA.
This pub is not has refined as some of the other pubs i visited in Harrogate.
