Pretty poor vist on this occasion. Bar staff serving the regulars out of turn. The usual clique in the main room being arsey. A poor range of beer on the bar, not a great experience all round. I'm beginning to go off this pub, there's just too many people who go in here on a Saturday who think they own the place.

Back again, very busy in the main room so we sat in the snug to the left as you enter the pub. Another couple of good pints before we moved on to the nearby Old Bell.

Called in again last week. Very friendly and efficient barmaid. Daleside Pride Of England on as a guest, which was in good nick. We never miss this place when we're in Harrogate, highly recommended.

Great bar that we call in regularly when in Harrogate. Because of it's Victorian design and gas lighting and the efforts of the staff this place does Halloween brilliantly. Skulls and cobwebs everywhere, a must visit on the 31st October. It's also great at all other times of the year. The draught Bass is very well kept and reminds you of how good Bass can be if given a little TLC. Usually a couple of guest ales on alongside the regulars, all well kept in my experience. Go and try it, you won't be disappointed.

Despite the tendency to modernise or convert town pubs to soulless, single bar themed drinking places, this pub is an exception and is an absolute gem offering aa array of guest beers and is a magnet for the real ale buff, but has stiff competition from The Old Bell Tavern just up the road. Working gas lamps decorate the bar, other oddities strewn around, although perhaps it is a little over the top in the taxidermy department. It is the oldest pub in Harrogate and was one of the first inns used by Spa visitors.Beneath the cellar sulphur springs still flow and apparently on occasions the distinctive odour can be detected around the bar area.I sampled the Shepherd Neame Spitfire(4.2abv)which was good but at £3.10p a pint should be.Definitly worth a visit,

Old Boots left this review about Hales Bar

Splendid gas lit victorian interior in the Saloon bar, now with some electric lights so it's not quite as atmospheric as previously. Decorated with old brewery ad's, stuffed birds and victorianna. Largely Yorkshire beers from local boys at Daleside, plus 3 from Goose Eye, Tetleys Cask with Bass bringing up the rear. Draught Hoegaarden also on along with the usual keg range. Exuberant and slightly mad australian bar staff who keep the beer well but just a bit too cold. A popular tourist destination due to the interior and sometimes probably needs a higher staffing level. Popular events and themed evenings take place although seating can be limited. There is more basic Vaults next to the ostentatious Saloon Bar, quiet but the original Victorian surroundings are extremely pleasant, they reminded me of some pubs I used in the 1970s in Bristol, - elegant honest drinking shops. Only three pulls in the vaults but a well chosen range if a bit expensive for Harrogate in general. Visit either bar first but do try them both.

Claims to be the oldest pub in Harrogate, and who am I to disagree? Very nice pub, read leather sofa's, large choice of local beers, Strongbow cider on tap (plus Thatcher's Pear, Katy and Gaymers in bottles).
Bar maid was very friendly and offered us several samples of the beer without us even asking.
Highly recomended.

Came across this gem after emerging from walking the Valley Gardens.
A truly splendid pub with a great dimly lit victorian interior. Lots of period fixtures and fittings, including what looks like the original gas lighting.
Interior is divided into two bar areas and the main one has a collection of old brewery mirrors, old pictures, and an assortment of stuffed animals to add to the ambience.
Places like this are not everyones cup of tea, but certainly was mine.
Including the TT Landlord, Bass, Tetley and Copper Dragon Best which were on during my visit.

This is a decent looking pub with lots of flowers in baskets outside, once inside i went in a longish fairly basic room that was fairly quiet on my visit.
There were two real ales on the bar i had a drink of Daleside Blonde which was a very nice drink the other beer was Taylor Landlord.
I thought this was quite a nice pub.
