Graham Coombs left this review about The Montpellier

A comfortable and smart yet fairly traditional pub, perhaps a little upmarket reflecting its location in 'the Montpellier Quarter' but nice enough except a slight smell of drains seems to have replaced the food odours. The range of ales - Theakstons Best and Old Peculier, TT Landlord and Bradfield Farmers Blonde - seemed fair enough but were still decidedly overpriced, all being well over a fiver.

It’s nice to see it’s still maintaining its position as Harrogate’s most expensive ordinary pub and the one with the most badgering signs, although perhaps not as many as previously. The cooking smells have disappeared too, maybe it’s not doing food at present. So so beer quality.

We found the Montpellier to be very well run on our visit. The place was clean and tidy with tables cleared away quickly, when customers had finished dining. The staff were friendly and chatty, and the place had a nice relaxing atmosphere to it. There were four ales on, two from Theakston, TT Landlord and a Golden Pippin, which was good, but on the expensive side.

Called in again last week. I see what OB means about the chip smell. The whole place smelt of slightly over used chip fat on our visit. The Daleside Old Legover was only OK this time as well.

Called in on both nights on our visit to Harrogate last weekend. No chippy smell or vinegar bottles/place mats etc when we were in which was early/mid evening on both occasions. Wooden dining style tables at the front of the long thin room give way to bench seating and stools at the back. 3 handpumps serving Black Sheep bitter, Taylor Landlord and Daleside Old Legover. I had four pints of the Daleside over the two nights all well kept, but as OB says rather pricey. I thought it was OK but the other half loved it (which is why we had to go twice).

A long thin pub which is a bit too hot and a bit over-priced. The atmosphere is a bit like a chip shop with dining in facilites, there is a strong smell of chips and vinegar. It is however efficiently staffed. The decor is modern with stripped pine in a cafe like-setting, that is to say there are brown plastic Sarsons vinegar bottles and brown place mats at every table. Customers generally drink mass produced lager or smooth while waiting for their Fish'N'Chips. Cask ales from Courage, John Smiths and, fortunately, Daleside, as well as a wide range of keg beers.

This is a smallish pub in a very nice part of Harrogate.
Once inside there was a longish narrow room that was quiet most customers were sitting outside.
There were two real ales on here i had a drink of John Smiths cask which was slightly off the other beer was Tetley bitter.
