The Red Lion is a Wetherspoons with seating either side of the entrance and also at the rear opposite the bar counter that runs up the right-hand wall. There’s a television that was showing muted news, and in the centre of the pub is a beer shelf with stools and plugs for the charging of phones, much like one would find at an airport. On the square out front are lines of picnic tables behind waist high barriers.
The bar supports standard and premium keg and there are two banks of five hand pumps that were mirrored with Exmoor Brewery’s Gold and Sharp’s Doom Bar alongside Greene King’s IPA, Abbot Ale and Abbot Ale Reserve, the latter coming in at 6.5%. The JDW food menu is also in operation. I found the service to be polite, but this wasn’t my favourite Spoons.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Red Lion (JD Wetherspoon)

Always an inn, rather than a conversion, so the seating / dining areas in the original part of the building retain some character. That said, the extension over what was probably the rear courtyard is quite well done, and if that doesn't take your fancy then the outside area has now been extended out into the Market Place. Disappointingly, the two banks of five handpumps were offering a fully duplicated selection of Ruddles, Doom Bar, Abbot, Hobgoblin and Adnams Broadside (but was just £1.99, so one can't complain too much).

The Red Lion is an original pub and is grade II listed, hence no dark blue and gold plastic signage. It's been given a typical modern JDW makeover with eating areas either side at the front and a smallish square bar area behind with a mix of seating. As it's just under five years old the fixtures and fitting are better than average.
Being a relatively small JDW in a smallish market town means that half of the ten hand pumps were taken up with the JDW Trio Of Doom. At least the rest were all in use with Grainstore 1050, Adnam's Mosaic, Great Newsome Frothingham Best, Gadd's No 5 and Elland Beyond the Pale. I went for the 1050 (£2.05) which was in excellent nick and also had a go at the Steak Club (£6.09).
I thought this was a pretty good Spoons, it's GBG 2017 listed.

This pub has just been purchased by Wetherspoons who have reputedly put aside over a million pound budget to do it up.
Hopefully that is the case and another one may come back from the dead.

In the Thetford and Brandon times a few weeks ago.

"Red Lion options under review -- SOME readers will doubtless be interested in what has happened to the Red Lion, Market Place, Thetford, over recent days. The building is owned by Thetford Town Council and was most recently managed by a tenant of the council's under the terms of a 15 year lease, which commenced in 2001. The tenant agreed recently to surrender the lease and the council is now reviewing its options. The boarding of windows is looked upon as a necessary safety measure. ED CHAMBERS Clerk to Thetford Town Council."

As of today, 6 July 10, the pub is shut again, this time boarded up. It was re-opened sometime after the new year, around February after being shut since at least November 2009, when we moved into the area.
