My first visit to this Chalk Hills Brewery pub since I started writing reviews for Pubs Galore, though I had certainly been here before with Luton Town friends before at least one game at Carrow Road, though memories are a little hazy. 2005? Quite possibly. My first visit here when it has not been rammed by football fans anyway. First impression was not good as I approached the bar trying to make out the pump clips, as is my usual habit, and was told rather brusquely by the barman to look at the beer list on the black board. Which was on a beam above my head. I suppose this makes sense if the floor is crammed with pre- or post-match drinkers, but at a quiet time of week a more personal touch would have gone down well. There were anyway three lots of three hand pumps, and since all the pump clips are in a kind of code (a bit like railway stations: SHF for Sheffield is obvious, and DBY for Derby, but why is MHS Meadowhall?), it's not easy for a newcomer. I went for CHB, which of course was Chalk Hills Bitter, and very good it was too (NBSS 3.5). I'd be interested in doing this one again, to get better aquainted with the beer code as much as anything, and it is handy for the station (NRW, of course).

Steve C left this review about Coach & Horses

Set back from the passing road, the Coach & Horses has rows of covered picnic tables out the front, so it’s not the most attractive place to gaze upon. Inside, there is pew type seating in the front windows either side of the entrance and up the left are some high table and stools that run to an open plan seating area at the rear. On the left-hand wall is a dartboard and televisions are found throughout. Norwich were getting hammered by Boro so the atmosphere wasn’t exactly electric, but it was very busy. This is a Chalk Hill Brewery pub so six off there cask options were available, Tap, CHB, Gold, Ruby, Black Anna and Cask-Ade. Redemption Brewing’s Big Chief was the cask guest and craft keg was also available. I though it was OK in here, it was certainly very handy as my hotel was over the road. Worth popping into if making the walk east to the Fat Cat & Canary.

Visited by Steve ‘Strongers’ C and myself, due to the close proximity to the railway station and Premiere Inn.
It’s a bit of a slog up the hill, a walk feeling all the longer due to the rain. Out front, the ugly tent is still in situ, but inside it’s a resolutely locals’ or students’ hangout, with TVs aplenty giving a sports bar feel, but with bar blockers aplenty, making viewing the clips almost impossible. Overall, it was quite noisy inside and no doubt would have been a lot nosier if the Canaries weren’t being given a 5 – 1 plucking by the Boro.
Seemingly four ales on cask, my Chalk Hill Gold costing a pricey £2.25 a half and dull.
Not a great pub; I wouldn’t bother returning.

Bucking Fastard left this review about Coach & Horses

Not far from the station ,so a good place to start or finish a crawl, this large pub has a sports bar feel with flatscreens dotted about including one in the vast awning before the front door .The interior has very heavy and solid furniture throughout and lots of bar stools of the same material so blockers could be a problem. However the staff are very efficient ,although this maybe tested when Norwich City are playing at home. It's the home to the Chalk Hill Brewery and you will need to drift around the bar to see the full range on offer, although many brews appear on more that one pump.On my visit the range was their CHB,Tap,Gold (NBSS 3),Ruby,Black Anna and Pale.
There is a modern darts board to one side ,and several seating booths dotted about,it has a very blokey feeland was popular with the footie on the screens.
This was a brief crawl visit and it would take a few visits to come to a decision on how good Chalk Hill ales actually are,but it's in the 2023 GBG and would be worth including on a crawl.

Quinno _ left this review about Coach & Horses

The first pub on my epic Norwich weekender. The front of the has been (temporarily?) disfigured by a big tent. Fortunately the J-shaped interior remains rather fabulous - herringbone floor, pillar box red walls and traditional fittings - and we settled in nicely. They brew their own beer on-site (Chalk Hill brewery) and five of theirs were on. Sadly my choice of Tap was a bit musty (aspirator?) and pump tired (NBSS 1.5) made worse by service with a grunt. A simple summation; ‘lovely pub, shame about the beer and service’. 6.5
Visited early August.

Moby Duck left this review about Coach & Horses

A large main room with a long curved bar housing nine handpumps with five beers available, I went for Chalk hill Gold which was ok without being remarkable. There is outside seating to the rear and at the time of my visit outside seating at the front covered by a huge marquee almost obscuring the pub from the roadside. The pub was fine but I didn't get as much out of it as the previous reviewers seemed to have.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Coach & Horses

After tasting some of their superb ales at the Norwich Beer Fest, it was on my hit list to visit this Chaulk Hill Brewery Tap. The interior was comfortable and I especially admired the original parquet or herringbone floor. There was an open fire lit in the front area of the pub, so we sat picking through their beer list comprising of 6 ales repeated over their 12 handpumps. I thought their CHB pumpclips carved out of wood were brill. I went for the CH Best, Gold, Brewery Tap. The Flintknappers Mild wasn't to my taste as it was brewed using too much chocolate malt. Serves food, Friendly staff, will call again.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Coach & Horses

If you have some spare time waiting at the station, it is well worth taking a quick walk up Thorpe Road to this interesting brew-pub (with the kit housed in a couple of outbuildings in the small rear yard). Roughly 'L'-shaped bar layout with traditional wooden furniture and breweriana decor. Patio seating also available at the front. A total of 12 handpumps can be found around the counter, half of which usually offer the full range of Chalk Hill Brewery ales (e.g. Brewery Tap at £2.40) plus a selection of mostly regional guest beers. (NB - Review dates from March 2012.)
