John Bonser left this review about The White Hart

Update - July 2012

Had a reasonable pint of Greene King IPA Gold in here yesterday. Other beers on were Theakstons and Fullers London Pride. A beer from Brains - Le Peloton - was noted as "coming soon". Pub unchanged from my previous visit, a nice traditional, if rather worn, interior. Quite pleasant sitting outside in the garden at the back on a rare sunny day. Staff seemed a bit more enthusiastic and welcoming than noted by me previously. This was a more enjoyable visit and a score of 6 ( rather than 4 - as scored previously ) is probably about right

Original review in April 2011 - A short walk away from The Duke of Cambridge is The White Hart. Although situated in a largely residential area, it’s virtually opposite a rather large and ugly compound of used and scrapped cars.

Outside the pub, we learn that it’s Whitton’s oldest pub and dates back to “circa 1685”. It’s a longish single bar pub featuring dark beams, low ceilings, some exposed brickwork and several different, but adjoining, drinking areas. Unusually, there’s 2 dartboards, one situated in a snug on the far left and the other in an adjoining area. The interior is traditionally furnished with bar stools along the length of the bar and a comfortable, carpeted interior, albeit one that is looking a little worn and neglected in places.

On my recent evening visit, a few locals were watching the Spurs v Arsenal game on one of the TV’s near the end of the bar. A few other drinkers were enjoying the warm evening in the large garden at the rear of the pub.

There’s 4 pumps, of which, on my visit, two each were serving London Pride and Sharps Doom Bar. The Doom Bar was moderate. I didn’t detect any great emphasis or commitment to real ale. The welcome was rather muted and I sensed that the barman was more interested in watching the football than in serving drinks, and he didn’t make much effort to disguise this fact.

Taking the experience as a whole, I was somewhat underwhelmed by this place.

This pub does not look much from the outside, but the inside has that low ceilinged look of a country pub, with its dark painted beams and posts. It’s surprisingly spacious inside with several interconnected rooms meandering around the bar counter, including what might best be described as a snug on the left with a few tables and chairs in it (and a dartboard), that looks as if it might have been a later addition to the pub building. It’s carpeted throughout with only normal metal framed tables, normal chairs and small stools, and a few stools at the bar. Very traditional. There was a second dartboard in one of the main rooms. Nonetheless, the usual array of one-armed bandits and games machines were present, plus (muted) TV screens showing Sky Sports.
On the real ale front there seems to be a Brain’s bias. They had Brain’s SA on (at £3.20 a pint), and “available soon” was Reverend James. Bombardier was also available during my visit. There were no food menus on the tables, but they clearly did food as I saw someone eating (I was in there on a Wednesday lunchtime). I quite like the look of this pub. I suppose it’s nothing very special really, but I thought it was a comfortable enough pub with the distinct appearance of a community local. The large garden at the back looks like a comfortable place to spend an hour or two on a warm day. I would be happy to visit again.
