A refined pub, smartly done up by Fullers with neat traditional furnishings, brightened up with a bit of greenery which goes well with the nice leaded windows. Well tabled for eating (Thai food and Sunday carvery) but not laid up so it still seemed more like a pub than a restaurant. Add some relaxing music and it all felt quite pleasant. Just London Pride and Hophead on the cask front at this time.

This is a Fuller's pub with mainly their ales on of course, but on my visit they also had on Adnam's Ghost Ship as a guest. The Fuller's ales on were the usual pair of London Pride and ESB, but also on was their seasonal Old Winter Ale (5.3% and £2.20 a half). They do food of course, with their main courses at £12+ - the "slow braised beef, mushroom and ale pie" with peas and "skin on fries" is £13.25. But on the Wednesday lunchtime I was in they also had a pizza menu available. There were only four choices, and with the 12" version at at £9.50, and the 8" version at £8.

It's now fairly minimalist inside, being bare-boarded and with a sort of browny grey paintwork much in evidence on the ceiling and walls. But all the seating wrapped around the central island servery is either banquettes or or normal tables and chairs. For some reason though, a door is attached to the ceiling, which is quite unusual as far as decor goes. There's a garden at the back.

The service from the barmaid (landlady?) was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I found this one a bit better then "OK". The pepperoni pizza I had was very good, as was the Old Winter Ale.

I found the governor to be very polite and there were 3 real ales on including Pride and ESB. The usual selection of lager was also available along with a gastro type menu.

It's a big pub with an island bar in the middle although the pub is in sections around the bar rather than being one big room. The beer garden has a covered section and although it is quite small it is well maintained and very cosy.

I may return if in the area and feeling a bit peckish.
