Nice story but actually Steve, it acquired its sobriquet "The German's" after its first landlord, Louis Spielman, who ran it from 1891 to 1895. As a little girl in the late 1920's my mum (now in her 90's) had to go there every day to get my grandad's (not the one I mentioned below - that was my dad's dad) jug of beer and it was known as the German's then.

Like fellow poster Bob below I too utilised the Railway Arms back in the early days of my pub going career, and popped in last week for a quick one for old times sake when dropping a colleague off at the nearby train station, and yes it has not changed a bit.
Still a no frills back street local. Sadly still nothing decent to drink but even I will stoop to a pint of keg in adversity.
The current landlord seems to be making a thriving concern as a B&B as well utilising the rooms above the pub so good on him for that.
And to add to Bob's comment below the pub is known locally as "The Germans".
This comes from the period of the second world war when the pub was the local for the munitions workers in the nearby Royal Small Arms factory (now long gone, but the street name gives a clue). And as such it attracted the attention of German Spies who used to mingle with the local workers trying to pick up what was going on in the arms factory.
But I don't think they were that successful as I also take my input from my Grandad who had a stint in the Small Arms factory and used to say they were "bleeding obvious and easy to spot"....

A proper pub! Back in the 'seventies "The German's" was my local (in the 'fifties and 'sixties my grandad even had his own chair at the bar - nobody else ever sat in it as he spent every hour of opening time in it!). Visited a few weeks ago and the only thing that had really changed was the staff - but the new ones are just as friendly!

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Railway Inn

A traditional sort of pub, at the 'cheap and cheerful' end of the market (but none the worse for that, as it appears to be well run). No real ale unfortunately, so had to do with keg Whitbread Best (just like the old days...).
