This Greene King pub is tucked away in a good location alongside the New River and has a certain amount of visual charm. There are two entrance doors quite close together which hints at a previous multi room layout but these days after a corporate refurb it is largely open plan, but with much more space than appears from the outside.Once inside there is a small alcove to the left,an L shaped bar ahead with high tables opposite, while through an arch is a side room with traditional furniture and a modest flatscreen for Sky and BT Sport, off during my visit.
The best feature is a lower lounge in a conservatory running the whole width of the building and with good views over the well kept pub garden. This lounge looks a very comfortable place to sup.Corporate food menu are everywhere and there are over 60's meal deals during the day, midweek.
On my afternoon visit the ale selection was GK Abbott and IPA (doubled up) with guests TT Landlord and appropriately New River Riverbead Red (too warm, may have been hanging about).I assume a Local Heros lease may operate here, meaning as many guests as GK crap offered .
Despite the food offering,it had the feel of a smart local and higher marks would have been awarded if more care had been taken with the ale.

This is a Greene King pub, but had on a reasonable selection of ales, with their own IPA, My Generation Session Pale Ale, Timothy Taylor Landlord, and Titanic Plum Porter all available. I had a half of the latter for a change, which was actually quite nice in a Christmas pudding kind of way. This is what they call a "Flame Grill" pub, with a glossy menu on all the tables detailing all kinds of meal deals - perhaps too many to fully grasp at first glance. Interestingly, the Sunday roast is £9.99 (I would call that a tenner - if we vote the Monster Raving Loony Party in then we'll have a 99p coin!), but only £3.99 for seniors and kids. The menu doesn't say so, but the kids' and seniors' option must be quite a bit smaller than the standard version.

When you approach this pub down the footpath, and then across the narrow bridge over the canal, you hope for some unspoilt gem. But alas that's not the case. It's a thoroughly madeover pub, with a phalanx of tall tables/tall stools at the front, a mix of tiled and modern replacement bare-boarded flooring, and of course at this time of year there's loads of Hallowe'en tat all over the place. Is Hallowe'en celebrated in pubs? I thought Hallowe'en existed to give licence to marauding bands of kids to wander the streets to annoy law-abiding citizens who just want a quite night in watching television with a bottle of beer or two? But maybe I'm missing the point.

To the left of the servery down a couple of steps is a comfortable indoor terrace overlooking the large garden at the back. This is probably a nice place to spend time on a nice summer's day, but it was a bit ordinary on a miserable October evening. My Plum Porter was good though, and the overall ale selection was good by GK standards.

Popped in last night for the first time in 40+ years (as well as the Cricketers next door) and what a surprise! The place has definately gone up market and is now a very comfortable and welcoming pub with a warm atmosphere. Excellent friendly service and well kept ales. The menu is normal pub fare but looks to be very good value for money - may well sample it next time we're in Enfield.

There is something about crossing a river to get to a pub that makes me have high hopes of a finding a decent establishment, but unfortunately this place was a let down. As has been said before it is tired and needs some work doing.

This is a Greene King pub and they had three of their ales available during my visit alongside a standard draught selection. I found the staff to be polite enough, although they certainly gave the impression that the last place they wanted to be was standing behind the bar.

The beer garden is huge and the grass is thin and patchy, but I was more put off by the thousands of cigarette butts that have been thrown on the floor and there has been no effort to clean them up for some time.

Nice location, shame about the pub.
