Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Barrow House
Formerly the George, closed for a while but now reinvigorated as a 'Kitchen + Village Pub + Rooms' establishment. The older part of the building features the distinctive local white weatherboarding, and there are plenty of exposed beams inside the main, partly opened-out bar area. There is also a small, hall-like side extension, forming an overall 'L' shape layout. Comprehensively refurbished in a tasteful gastro-pub style. There are also several wooden benches out front and a split-level rear patio / beer garden. Three handpumps on the counter, offering a 'house' beer from Tonbridge Brewery, the ubiquitous Harvey's (£3.60) and Summer Lightning.

I’ve known this pub for the past forty odd years, and have always enjoyed coming up the hill from the Weald. A white weatherboarded house, with outcrops of ragstone , it sits in a commanding position at the centre of a quiet village. Two main drinking areas : a games room style space at the back, leading out to the carpark, together with an airy bar towards the front,opening onto the Street. Additionally, there are a couple of rooms overlooking the Weald that are laid up for dining.
We visited on one of the few balmy Wednesday evenings in August: the doors were open, and a varied group of customers came and went-some eating , some drinking, all at ease. The current landlord hasn’t been in post for very long, but has created a pleasant atmosphere, and appears to be attracting trade from surrounding villages. The food was hearty, and capably served: I can’t comment on the restaurant side of things. I drank a decent pint of Harvey’s Sussex Best, followed by Summer Lightening, one of a rotating pool of guest beers.
This is the sort of pub that every village needs, a proper community hub.
26/2/17 Update. After a long spell of closure following a period of rotating landlords, this pub has reopened as The Barrow House, under the same management as The Milk House in Sissinghurst. A brief visit on a February Saturday lunchtime found a rather clinical refurbishment which has retained the original layout of the pub, though I didn't venture into those parts devoted to dining on this occasion. The welcome was warm, the food looked good in a refined way, and the beer superlative. However I'm not sure if it will attract the local trade,given the popularity of The Rose and Crown at Mundy Bois. I'm fond of the building, and we'll be back.

This pub now has a new owner and an extremely good chef and is extremely different! The previous review could not be argued with but now it has all the charm that a traditional country pub should. It has beer from local breweries such as westerham, rolvenden, harveys,gouchers, youngs and many more rotating. Well worth a visit.

This place is .... rather difficult to describe - too many contradictions. It's beautifully located in a very rural setting. So where do all the lager louts come from? It's obviously only a short hop from being a five-star restaruant, so why have the pool table? There's five hand pumps in a row, so why have two serving the same ale, and another two serving another identical ale?
And very commonly availbale ales too.
For pretty much everyone, it's the sort of place you'd have to get a friend to drive you to. If you're after a fine meal and don't mind raucous lager louts in the background, this is the place to be. If you DO mind raucous lager louts in the background while you're eating, try the Mundy Bois just up the road. If on the other hand you're after a quiet pint in the countryside, you're spoiled for choice in the area.
But if you want a pint of ale that you can get pretty much anywhere in the company of raucous lager louts, this is the place to be. But don't expect to find me there.
