A short stroll from the CAMRA award winning Magazine, The Pilot boat also dates back to the 1750’s but this is a totally different kind of pub to ‘the Mags’.
A single room set up carpeted throughout the main bar area is to the right and mainly for drinking and the left hand side is laid to tables for dining.
This appeared to be a well utilised community pub as the place was very busy for our early Saturday evening visit, the bar section full with a large group who had clearly been in situ for some time and every table in the dining area taken with mainly families, although one large table was taken for a 69th birthday celebration if the large balloons were to be believed. Or at least we assumed it was a 69th birthday rather than what the birthday person was requesting as a present, because all I can say is that the air must be good in this part of the Wirral as we couldn’t make out anyone resembling that milestone.
The only free table was a high one under the jukebox which wasn’t the quietest spot as several members of the group in the bar made several visits to pick tunes. But it did lead to good banter with the locals, especially after they had clocked our accents, and especially from one local wag who insisted on sticking on some Chaz and Dave for us.
For the record there are two ale pumps which were dispensing Doombar and a passable Lancaster Blond, but I got the impression the Lager taps get more usage in here.
I have to be honest and say the Magazine was my preference of the two, but this is a good friendly community local, and there is nothing wrong in that.

nowhere near as good as the Magazine, but a decent community local. Two real ales in Lancaster Blonde and Silver King but steep at £3.90 a pint. Food was being served and the pub is clearly popular with the locals.

A good sized pub which consists of one room, with a decent sized bar area, situated over on your right as you enter. The décor is cream and maroon painted walls with tiles around the bar and carpeted throughout. Pine panelling ran around the walls up to dado height. The pub also had its original leaded windows with stained glass motifs at the top. The pub was busy on our visit, attracting diners and those watching sport on the TV. Two handpumps serving Black Sheep and Wainwright, I went for the Black Sheep, which was in good shape.

A pleasant pub with some real ales. Just up from the promenade it has to compete with the nearby Magazine and though it is nice The Magazine is better.

Wonderful Sunday Lunches and fabulous evening meals at a reasonable price. The Pilot was recently refurbished in 2010 and the current Licensees Jayne and Dave make everyone feel welcome. Live music on a Saturday.
