Brainy Pool left this review about Royal Alfred

Has finally settled down and focused on serving good beer. Pleasant atmosphere and a range of decent ales in good condition. Let’s hope it continues.

A good sized pub, with an L shaped lounge and bar. There were two raised areas one near the front entrance with tables and chairs and another at the far end of the pub with a white pool table. The bar area was finished in a dark stained timber and a floor tiled perimeter added some feature. The lighting was good and I especially liked fitted brass lamps above the internal front windows. There was also a roaring open fire in the right hand side lounge area. An added bonus was the train time display at the end of the bar.
Three handpumps serving Salopian Shropshire Gold, Black Sheep Bitter and Brimstage Trappers Hat. The same owner here has the Talbot in town and is trying to bring a good selection of cask ales to both pubs. It's just a pity the bar staff don't pay close any attention as the Black Sheep was well past its best and Will had to tell him to turn the pump clip back. I also went for the Brimstage Trappers Hat, which was fairly nondescript.

Will Larter left this review about Royal Alfred

Our last pub of the day in St Helens, and we were hoping for a good one to finish off. One good point in its favour is the departure screen for the nearby railway station, so no excuses for missing the train. Of the three hand pumps, two had hand-written pump clips, which doesn't make a good impression. The Black Sheep Bitter was undrinkable, and the pump clip was turned around after we complained. We settled for the Brimstage Trappers Hat instead, but I somehow failed to make a note of my impression of this beer. I did note that there was a strong smell of paint, or solvent. Given the previous review's mention of a refurbishment, it seems strange that they would be repainting again so soon.

Open planned pub with a rectangular shaped bar close to the railway station.Called in before my train was due and tried a pint of William Hancocks H B which had definitely seen better days.
