Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Swan Inn

Tucked away on an unassuming side street, but close to much of Liverpool's night life, this is a pub known for its rock music. Spread over two floors, it can get very busy at weekends. However, on our Tuesday evening visit, we were just about the last ones out at around 11pm. Music from the jukebox had been playing fairly loudly. So, this may not be everyone's cup of tea. However, I quite enjoy an occasional visit here.

Whilst the pub has not featured in the Good Beer Guide since 2014, there is always a good selection of real ales. Phoenix Hopsack and the dangerously drinkable Wobbly Bob are always on. Guests for our visit were Bateman's Rosey Nosey, Spitting Feathers Winter Solstice & Robinson's Trooper. A handpull at the far end of the bar also dispenses Rosie's Triple D cider, making it a worthwhile visit for cider fans.

This is a very basic place. But if you enjoy real ales and cider as well as rock/metal music, it's probably for you.

didn’t notice the upstairs bar. or indeed any aroma. there were a few bikers in but this just felt like a friendly side street bar with a slight bias towards rock music. a really good one roomed boozer and, since you asked, a good selection of real ales too. 8/10.

This is a bikers style pub but without the bikes. An upstairs bar and a ground level bar of which both can be of varying aromas. Usually a decent variation of real ales on over time. Lots of interesting, or quite possibly dull, clientele to mix with and most can be very hairy, usually unwashed. Lots of crusty old blokes trying to look like wizards can be a bit of a bore. Still its a decent enough place.

This is a pob I remember visiting in the 80's and 90's and it's hardly changed at all.
Inside it's a narrow open plan room with a wooden floor, fairly basic wooden furnishings and the bar on the right. It was fairly quiet on my Saturday afternoon visit and given it was July there was nobody wearing a grubby overcoat.
One of the main attractions here is the great rock jukebox which still has CDs rather than a hard disk drive full of rubbish. It was on at a fairly high volume which normally would put me right off but not here. The record selection seems to have moved on a bit since I was last here but they still had Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama. I didn't get to put anything on as younger folk than me kept putting selections on.
The bar has eight hand pumps which had two unused, Phoenix Wobbly Bob & Hopsack, Cottage Iron Duke & Starlight, Lancaster Honey Brew and Robinson's Trooper.
I had a couple of the Wobbly Bobs which was £3.85 a pint and in excellent condition, To me this is well overpriced but to be fair the Phoenix cooking beer is only £2.75. I've only ever tried Wobbly Bob in here and if the current owners ever retire one would hope that Phoenix brewery might consider taking it on. It gets a nostalgic 8 from me but is really probably worth less! I can't imagine a visit to Liverpool that didn't include a Wobbly Bob in here.

I've called in here twice recently. Once on my own and once with the other half. I quite like this pub, it's a down to earth rock pub with no airs and graces. A good selestion of ales which are decently kept if not completely top notch in my opinion. The clientele are a bit rough and ready and on both my visits there's been someone asleep in a corner (not the same person though). I like it, the other half hates it. I guess I'll not be revisiting if she's with me then. :-))

Walking down Wood Street, the odds of finding a decent pub seem to diminish the further along you go –the names of the bars you have to pass are enough to suggest you’ve stumbled into the wrong part of town – Bar Ca Va, The Krazy House, Fudge. By the time you reach the IGLOO Cocktail Bar, hopes of finding a good pint have all but disappeared, but then, amidst all the cheap beer barns and overpriced wine bars, the Swan Inn comes into view – a healthy antidote to the dross that surrounds it. The Swan is a traditional, if slightly scruffy, rockers pub with a good ale range, thereby attracting an interesting mix of customers.
The ground floor is a fairly basic affair with wooden floors and some standard tables with low stools in the relatively open rear part of the room, past the servery. It was pretty busy when we arrived on a Saturday evening, so we went upstairs in search of a seat. The first floor has its own bar, albeit one without any ale, and a comfortable seating area under the windows at the front of the pub. Best of all, the room hosts an excellent video juke box complete with just about every decent rock album from the last 50 years, which we enjoyed spending time flicking through. I imagine the volume had been turned up a few notches from the normal daytime level, but it was still easy enough to hold a conversation without resorting to shouting. The room is decorated with some interesting artwork which fits in pretty well with the feel of the pub. There is a third level as well – a kind of mezzanine which looks down over the first floor seating area.
The beers on our visit were Lancaster Black, Concrete Cow Fenny Potter, Spitting Feathers 1862, Marston Moor Smutty Nose, Hyde’s Original and Phoenix Hopsack and (Aqualung will be pleased to hear) Wobbly Bob. Beer quality was a bit variable as I thought the 1862 wasn’t up to much, but I enjoyed the Fenny Potter very much.
I love the fact that this pub is thriving in a seemingly unlikely location and as someone who likes a good choice of beers and his guitars turned up to 11, I’d be more than happy to spend another evening trawling through that juke box.

A dark and moody rock bar that could not be described as comfortable but has a nice atmosphere. Not the sort of place for a dinner party but its a fine pub serving a select clientelle.

Lots of real ale, but the quality on my visit was a little lacking & far too warm.

Situated at the top end of Wood St, when walking up from Hanover St. An oasis in a street full of trendy bars. If you're into your Rock music and a good pint of beer like myself, this is the place for you.

Bucking Fastard left this review about The Swan Inn

An ecletic mix of customers gather in The Swan, some attracted by the heavy metal juke box, others by the range of real ales.8 handpumps were visible but only 6 were operating on my brief visit, with a selection of micobrewery offerings. My Boggarts Cascade had turned but was replaced without fuss. The interior is quite basic and the rear of the downstairs bar has quite vivid red lighting, but the juke box was only playing at modest volume. There is an upstairs bar,keg only, with small tables and stools but this wasn't operating afterwork on a Friday.
