Will Larter left this review about The Queens Head

This pub has been more than adequately described by the previous reviewers, and of course nothing has changed since then. When we arrived we asked for two halves of Adnams Bitter, but there was almost nothing left at the bottom of the barrel. No matter, another one was ready on the next shelf on the racking below. As I commented, it's a pleasure to see a really good beer poured without all the fuss of swan necks and sparklers. I also had a Woodfordes Reedlighter, which was also very good but not as good as the Adnams. The pub was busy at lunchtime with mostly older people enjoying the reasonably priced food as well as the very good beer (also reasonable, at £4.40/pint). (There is a bus from Addenbrookes arriving at 12:45 and returning at 14:05, but the other public transport options involve long walks from Foxton or Shelford stations. And back.)

The magnificent seven has been whittled down to the Famous Five, this is the second hardest to get to due to limited hours and a poor bus service, that may explain why there are only two other reviews and none for ten years. It’s an exceptional multi room village pub, the counter is in the public bar to the right on entering although the bar to the left has a small hatch. The beers are from casks behind the counter, don’t worry they have water cooling jackets and the beers are excellent. I had a Taylors Landlord and it was one of the best pints of it ever, in or out of Yorkshire. Traditionally furnished and decorated, all wooden furniture in various shapes, decorated with water colours, maps, needlework and stuffed birds. The ceiling of the public bar has an upside down cricket match. Very popular with the Lycra wearing fraternity as well as many locals including the vicar and his dog.

One of the "Magnificent Seven" pubs that have appeared in every edition of The Good Beer Guide, this is the epitome of a country village pub and I doubt it has changed in the fifty years that the Short family have been running it. The wooden front door opens onto a wood pannelled corridor with doors to the public bar to the right and saloon to the left.I went left and came into a very traditional pub interior with wooden beams, horns and antlers on the walls and a large brick fireplace with a warming log fire on a cold midweek lunchtime. There is also an unused inglenook at the end of the room, the furniture is authentic wooden, some settles and there is a small serving counter in one corner.
Although there is a freehouse sign outside, the pub only carries three Adnam's ales all served from the wood.Southwold Bitter and Broadside are regulars,my seasonal Topaz was in top condition. There is a simple lunchtime menu of soup and rolls or sandwiches,a little pricey but very high quality.
The public bar is larger but still traditional and there is no muzak, machines or any other modern contraptions.Use of mobile phones inside is politely outlawed.
This is a real gem and is popular with locals ,walkers and cyclists and if you want to step back in time to how pubs were in the immediate post war period,I am hard pressed to think of a better example. The younger members of the family now run the pub and are good, friendly hosts .Don't miss out on this pub if you are in the area.

This is what a pub should be. Ale out of the cask. Two bars, public and sallon. Roaring fire in winter. Fantastic.
