This back street local has a reputation for real ale, with thrice-yearly beer festivals as well as seven hand pumps scattered around the bar, with one cider and half a dozen beers. There were Hobgoblin and Bishops Farewell in one bar, if my notes made at the time are to be believed; see my possibly more reliable photos for beers on the other bar. I went for JW Lees Arkwright, but what appeared in my glass after the woman serving had pulled through and disposed of a couple of pints was vinegar. I went for the other JW Lees beer, but although it wasn't off it was definitely end-of-barrel, being cloudy and only just drinkable. Maybe a Tuesday afternoon is a risky time to be drinking real ales in suburban pubs that are probably only busy enough to sustain them at the weekends, but it's disappointing that a pub with an apparent enthusiasm for real ale doesn't have better quality control than this. (It would have been an easy 7 or possibly 8, for appearance, service, friendliness and beer range, but deserves no better than a 4 because of ale quality issues.)
