Attempted to visit on a Saturday night back in May, to find the front door firmly shut and locked at 9pm. Hopefully a one-off, but there was no note on the door to explain the early closure, and we were left disappointed. The cynic in me wonders if erratic opening hours and the poor ale selection mentioned by Mr Scrumpy below suggest this pub is on the decline - let's hope we both just had a bit of bad luck and caught the place on off days.

Long and thin pub. We entered from Queen Street and exited onto Lloyd Street. I won't describe the interior again, as it has been already adequately described below. Suffice to say there were a couple of real ales from Brightside - B-Side & Horsemen and a couple of real ciders from Weston's - Rosie's Pig & Cloudy Vintage.

This is a pub that was last in the Good Beer Guide in 2018 and it's one that I've been meaning to visit for a while. The interior does lack a little character and it sounds like we caught it on an off-day with just 2 ales. Although the offering of 2 ciders gives it an extra point in my book.

The front entrance of the Rising Sun, from Queen Street, leads to a rectangular seating area. Banquette seating in the front window area is overlooked by a television that was off during a recent Thursday afternoon visit when the pub was busy with a boisterous after work crowd and some tourists. The banquette seating continuous along the right wall up to the bar and along the wood panelled left wall are more tables and chairs. The bar on the right rear wall supports a limited premium keg range as well as eight hand pumps. These were drawing Brightside’s Odin Blonde, Sharp’s Landlord, two Moorhouses ales, Lancaster Brewery’s Lancaster Blonde and three Westons ciders, two from the Vintage range and Old Rosie. The bar faces some high tables and stools to the left and a long corridor at the rear leads to the toilets and the entrance on Lloyd Street.
I found the service from the long standing landlady to be extremely friendly, but considering the age and history of this place I was hoping for a more of traditional pub with some interesting features.

A single long room, the bar at one end. Several real ales including a stout, plus two real ciders. The somewhat un-publike utilitarian furnishings let it down, making it feel almost like a social club. Nice section of wood panelling but definitely lacks the charm of a Manchester city centre pub. Otherwise, friendly and busy and the beer was fine.

Return visit on Saturday night. It was pretty quiet, though perhaps the Dry January lot are keeping away. Eight hand pulls at the bar but of those three were dedicated to cider and two were off, leaving three real ales to choose from. My Epic IPA by Settle was decent enough though, and my drinking accomplice had the Black Stout by Blackedge, also good. I can't really put my finger on it but for me this pub doesn't seem to have the same charm that it once did.

A long corridor (with toilets) leads to a long room with a bar counter on the left, high tables nearby and bench seating towards the back. Or so say my notes made at the time. Alternatively, we could enter the pub through a door which leads through an area with bench seating against the front wall to high tables near the bar, which is on the right; toilets are down a corridor which leads to the back door. Old black and white photos, plus some advertising mirrors, adorn the walls. Eight hand pumps on the bar had six real ales and a cider at the time of my visit (see photos). I went for the Black Edge Black 4%, a fairly new brewery to me, having first come across its beer in Carnforth the week before, though I see from Untapped that they've been brewing in Horwich for seven years. I must get out more. Their Black was in very good condition and I would be happy to return to this pub another time.

Apparently, the Rising Sun is one of only 3 pubs in the Manchester City Centre to have a front and rear entrance (one on Lloyd Street & one on Queen Street).
I agree this is another good ale house with an interesting range of different styles of Ales as listed by the fellow crawler below. I went for the Salopian Darwin’s Origins which was in good form. So, in agreement, a decent pub.

A fairly basic pub with a long, narrow opened out room inside, it has street entrances at either end of the pub. There were seven pumps with beers I would describe as mid range on the interest scale. My Salopian Darwins Origin was well cared for.Certainly worth inclusion on a pub crawl.

Yet another good ale house with an entrance at either end of the pub. From Lloyd Street you enter into a long corridor before the bar appears on your left.A series of high table opposite and quite a low ceiling give way to a wood panelled seating area with brewery ephemera as decoration ,a calm and peaceful spot to sup in a smart yet traditional boozer.
The ale range from 7 handpumps was Moorhouse Witches Caldron and Broomstick,Lancaster Blonde,Edge Black Edge,Salopian Darwins Origins and Millstone Tiger Rut (very good shape) together with Old Rosie cider.A decent line up in a decent pub,so worth a crawl visit.

Rob Hunter left this review about Rising Sun

I have been to the Rising Sun quite a few times and it used to be a pub I would seek out in Manchester if I had a bit of time before my train. I hadn't been for about a year or so, so decided to include it in a bit of a crawl on Saturday. Maybe I had bigged it up too much in my mind but I think it has gone downhill a bit. Of the 8 hand pulls, only 4 were on, offering Oakham JHB, Uncle Monk's IPA (Beer Monkey) and a couple of others that I can't recall. I went for the Uncle Monk's IPA as it sounded the most interesting of the selection but it wasn't brilliant and lacked the punch you would expect from an IPA. I think I have had this before elsewhere and found the same thing, so it's no reflection on the pub, just the way that particular beer is. A half of that and the JHB set me back £4.25 so prices have crept up a bit since last year (I seem to recall £3.90 a pint).

Another real ale was being pulled through as we were having our drinks but as we left through the other door I didn't see what that one was. Overall I was a bit disappointed with the ale selection. Previously this would have been an 8 or 9 out of 10 for me, but based on my most recent visit it's a 7.
