Stopped off here for some food on our way to Bury St Edmunds after seeing some roadside signs advertising the pub. The interior is fairly sparse - lots of dull wood panelling - and gives the feeling that the place is part way through being done up, although I'm not sure that this is actually the case. A few bright posters adorn the walls, but given that it was a bright, sunny day, we decided to sit out in the small beer garden instead.I spotted four hand pumps offering Vale Brewery Best Bitter and Hop Pocket, plus two beers from another brewery which I forgot to take a note of. The Vale Best was excellent and went down very well in the warm weather. Food was fairly reasonably priced and portion sizes were pretty generous. I had the fish platter to share, which was more than enough for two of us and good value at just under a tenner. It was hard to gauge the success or otherwise of this pub on my visit. Most of the customers appeared to be passers by rather than regulars and to be honest, I'm not sure I would be keen on the place if it was my local, given the gloomy interior. But the beer and food was fine and as a stop-off point, it did its job just fine.
