Another Timbo Victoriana-era outlet (1993) though this has had a bit of an upgrade, presumably for the 2012 Olympics. As noted elsewhere it’s a fairly small interior with some booths round the back though there is a sizeable garden. A pointless huge snaking queue that I destroyed (at the behest of a beleaguered barmaid) by just going to the bar and standing in the empty space. Two Portobello as guest beers and my Carnival was, as I suspected on pouring, a watery characterless mess (NBSS 2). Happy to get gone, this is a Spoons for the transients.

Busy Spoon's with a large outdoor area out the back. We had a quick Burger and a pint deal here which was fine.

A small Wetherspoon's pub on a busy junction and with bouncers on the door for my Sunday morning visit. West Ham were playing at home later that day. So, the pub was busy.
It had been my intention to have a breakfast and a pint here and I'd already pre-selected my table when I patiently waited to be served, as staff tried to deal with foreign football tourists who didn't understand that they had to not only order their drinks at the bar, but take them away with them too.
By the time I got served, my pre-selected table had been occupied. With the absence of any real cider and no black pudding (shock horror), the pub only managed to take £1 off me for a half of the Branscombe Summa This, before I cut my losses and headed elsewhere.
The usual Wetherspoon's beers - Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar were all available. Three other guests were Titanic Plum Porter, Purple Moose Whakahari & Sambrook's Wandle.
The interior is much smaller than most Wetherspoon's, with the bar and one corner being on a slightly higher level than the majority of the seating. There were high tables for upright drinking adjacent to the bar and there is a good sized outdoor drinking area at the rear.

This large Wetherspoons pub on a prominent crossroads in the heart of Stratford, takes its name from the opening lines of the poem ‘Spring and Fall’ by local poet Gerald Manley Hopkins (“Margaret, are you grieving / Over Goldengrove unleaving?”). On approach, the pub has a very striking mural on the left-hand end of the building, made for the 2012 London Olympics and featuring a number of notable landmarks. You enter directly to the bar area, with the L-shaped servery over on the right-hand side. The bar has a nice dark wood counter broken by a number of large pillars along its length, and a fairly plain, mirrored bar back. There’s a limited amount of seating available in a small space opposite the bar, seemingly popular with the locals and therefore imbued with the feel of an old-fashioned public bar area. Some high tables and stools have been set out in rows through the centre of the room, but the majority of the seating is to be found over to the left, mostly in the form of basic tables and chairs, with a few padded bench booths here and there. More seating is available in the lower, rear part of the pub, which feels extremely cramped despite only having very small tables served by a handful of chairs and the odd banquette. Décor is typical ‘Spoons stuff, including the usual local history boards and various unrelated paintings and photos. A door to the rear leads out to a good sized patio garden furnished with plenty of sturdy benches. I popped in early on a Saturday evening and found the place pretty chaotic, with lots of yelling, staggering customers and a general sense that things could kick off at any minute.
I was just about ready to kick off myself after standing at the bar for about five minutes watching the staff standing around chatting to one another whilst the queues at the bar grew and grew, but someone eventually served me an acceptable pint of Sambrooks Scrumdown, which believe it or not, was the most exciting of the five guest ale options that lined up alongside five ‘Spoons regulars (some double clipped).
I didn’t really enjoy my visit here all that much and felt things probably peaked with the outdoor mural and went sharply downhill from there. The ‘lively’ atmosphere was actually quite enjoyable and the garden looked like a nice spot for the summer, but not much else caught my eye and I’ll give this a swerve next time out.

Totally typical Wetherspoon's at the east end of the Stratford one way system. Feels smaller inside than it looks but benefits from a garden at the rear,

This 'spoons looks very attractive from the outside as someone has gone to a fair amount of effort to provide an impressive floral display. But inside it's much like every other 'spoons. There is the usual mix of tall tables/tall stools and standard dark varnished tables and chairs, with as many of them crammed into the pub space as is possible. There's a bit of a garden at the back.
It's perhaps a bit nicer than most 'spoons I've been in, but the usual 'spoons features, good and bad, are all there.

It's over ten years since I last visited this Spoons. It's an old school one dating from May 1993 so the interior is largely wood. One unusual feature is that it has a half decent beer garden, far more than just a smoking area or a small bit of pavement outside the pub.
I seem to recall it never used to have a very good choice of ales so nothing has changed.
On the bar there were ten pumps selling Abbot and IPA doubled up, Coach House Gunpowder Mild, London Pride and then four uninvited guests. These were Fuller's ESB (at a price similar to a non Spoons pub earlier in Southend), Banks's Cereal Thriller, Jenning's Gold Digger & Wychwood Piledriver.
I went for the Cereal Thriller (£2.60) which was in good nick but was a bland boring 4% beer.
As this is a Spoons and given the poor beer choice and high prices for one of their pubs I have to severely mark it down.
There are much better options within an easy bus or tube ride and I don't just mean Spoons. Next time I'm in Stratford it will be the Tap East for me!

Do not breakfast in this pub. The chef cooks the worst breakfast ever. The hash browns are overcooked and the mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon are served burnt. I normally have scrambled egg on toast but after having their unusual version of lumpy fried eggs that they try to pass as scrambled I have now decided to get mine from McDonalds. Stratfords JDW serves the worst breakfast me and my husband have ever tasted. Try it yourself and see if you dont agree
